All my pictures now are taken with a Nikon CoolPix S8000. I am contemplating getting a DSLR, but not too sure which is better – Nikon or Canon. Could someone comment on this. Thanks.

    • Hello – thanks for the friend and welcome. I use a Canon 60D. I’ve always used Canon and am completely biased (without any knowledge of Nikon). Why don’t you post your question to a forum (joining groups and forums is the best way of getting involved in conversations) and you’ll get a wider (but not necessarily less biased) opinion :O)

I’ve always used a Nikon. I’ve had Nikon D300 and now D7000. I’ve stayed with the Nikon because that is the lenses I have and don’t want to buy different ones. I sell my photography in very large pieces 32×48 and some larger. I can’t say however which is best Nikon or Canon, I think it depends on which model. I suggest you research reviews and compare before you buy.

I’m considering Nikon, because Jacky Chen’s annoying me. LOL

Hi there and thanks for the friend invite. Agree with the forum question. Its probably the most common question. Most will tell you go hold them and see what works for you. Then buy the best lens’ you can afford – the whatever body you can afford. That way as you progress you don’t need to keep buying a new lens and some say the quality is in the lens more often than not. Both companies produce some high quality equipment.

    • It’s like choosing between Cadillac and Lincoln. Both make very good equipment, and it’s more a matter of personal preference. However, each is decidedly different in the way they feel and work. If at all possible, try to go to a camera shop where they will let you hold each in your hands. See which one “feels” the best to you. Also go through the menus on each and see which one seems to be the most intuitive for you. Each of us feels that the one we own is the “best”. Don’t be swayed by us or salesmen. Get your hands on each, and decide for yourself!

I made the change to DSLR recently and went for the Canon EOS 550D and a couple of Canon lenses. I could have gone Nikon but liked the 18 megapix option which lets me crop when taking birds at longer distances than I would like! No regrets so …

    • Find some models of each that you like, and Google the model combined with the kind of shooting you do. For instance I found that the model family of camera I have is notoriously at ISO settings over 400. So for me this means lot’s of noise to deal with in low light shots with a fast shutter speed. Outside during the day it’s fine. Also consider sensor size, bigger is better.

Hello! Nikon and Canon are both great, but what about Pentax? The high ISO performance on the K-r, K-7, and K-5 are all superior to the equivalent Nikon or Canon, and the APS-C sensors Pentax uses are larger than Canon’s. Pentax is also less expensive than the others, and ANY Pentax you buy is compatible with EVERY Pentax lens ever made! Plus, the K-r is available in a very bright red, not just black. If you haven’t decided yet, consider Pentax. Here’s a link for a review of the the K-r. http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/pentaxkr/
      And the K-5
