So the Australian government just rejected a submission from big tech.

They won’t be able to scrape data from Australian artists without explicit consent which means the existing copyright laws will be respected.

Frankly, I see this is a huge win.

I know there is an arms race in AI and I know that it would be very helpful if we won it, but it really sits badly with me that the engine of all of this is our work and it’s other people getting rich.

I shared a story about this on my ig a couple of days ago , this is the fightback in action mate , this will put a lot of those startups in a bubble that surely is going to burst , i know of one Australian text to image creator that is one of the main ones currently available , they have always told the users they are free to make prints and sell the works .. This will be the killer blow for many in the same line of work.

Even before AI, I had sometimes felt that the tools available in our software made refining my images so easy as to feel a bit like cheating. Darkroom craft had been reduced to a simple click and slider. Still, I at least started with a digital file based on camera craft and my vision. Now, someone can just say a bunch of words and have software scan millions of images to present something to the user that may or may not be what they had in mind. It also, though, may or may not include my own vision and craft to produce something the other person thought about.

Mass production is actually the precursor of all of this. Machines were built that standardized the ingenuity and craftmanship of true experts.

We’ve always had the reality that artistic work is often inspired by the work of other creators. The “too close to what I made”/copyright lawsuits stand testament.

AI is another iteration in the legacy of monetizing the skill of others, then not sharing the economic results and even driving the skilled artisan out of the financial benefits of their work. There are plenty of examples of AI that serve a positive purpose. A single country’s making AI difficult won’t stop the work of capitalists. Communities of producers of art and consumers making decisions to support them offer some hope. In the meantime, amateurs need to follow the label: exercise a creative impulse for the love of it and not allow profit to displace that love in favor of catering to the market.

LS provides a support for that community of lovers. Existence of the community built finds at least some of its impetus as a protest against the ethos of capitalizing on the hard work and vision of others.

Yes. People do feel that and say that. Push comes to shove, AI that is hidden is cheaper and often more convenient. Few buy art for the sake of art. So often, photography customers are looking for something that matches their couch color and vibe more than any artistic sensibility. So, at the same time as people want that personal touch, they feel it is remote from them and out of their ability to control for themselves and for their community.

Hope this happens here in the UK. I know a lot of design jobs are being lost to AI. I still hope most people would recognise when AI is at work and when its the  human touch!!! A could see a time when the company that provides that AI will start to take ownership of anything designed for other companies with their AI tools, then they could licence that particular design. That could workout more expensive than a designer. If this scenario happens designers would have to be very carful using AI.

Look, I can kind of see that there is a geopolitical imperative to get ahead with AI, because I can see a lot of jobs being lost to whether it is a friendly AI or an adversarial AI. With that said, .it would irritate me a whole lot less if the people who ran them were doing so as no nonprofit entities because it seems to me they’re going to be a handful of extraordinarily wealthy people whose wealth is built off the back of content creators of all stripes

Just read a news article summarizing several studies: AI use for writing and research causes brain rot—decline in ability to read and learn what your research actually produced. I keep going back to that Star Trek episode where a game triggered endorphins turning everyone into near Zombies. That is more like social media but it is AI driven.

I watched a podcast on this very topic and one can only agree with the findings.

Maybe that’s the point ? just joking but i can see that being taken as a real thing by some people concerned about some secret dystopian plan.

Isn’t there a whole country that has banned computers in schools? I’m sure it was one of the northern European ones. They’ve gone completely back to traditional classical education.

If an Advanced A.I. joined Lightstalking and started posting it’s more realistic creations, would we even know, And also you gave permission to edit your photos, which it could then add it to it’s data base it has a way in.

I honestly doubt that there is a way to know. I already responded to one of Patrick’s photographs with AI as in I let perplexity take control of my screen and type out my response. It didn’t sound like me and I finished off the post by telling Patrick that it was actually AI, but remember that AI is only a few years old. In another few years, I doubt we’ll have any way of knowing.

At its core, AI is another iteration in the international culture of “more.” Virtually all economies are driven by the notion of growth and expansion and its attendant use of all natural and human resources for gain. Way back when I was in school, I was taught–maybe just mentioned–that economics was also about understanding the distribution of goods and services to meet needs. There is very little mention of the distribution. For me, the goal of a good society should be using tools to free humans from drudgery to pursue community and creativity (not just artistic). Also, there has to be an understanding that we live in an earth with limited capacity and that growth is outstripping Mother’s ability to renew. One other interesting insight: the happiest countries are those where the residents do not hold expectations of ever expanding personal wealth, who have confidence in “enough.”

So, AI may invade. AI may take over. I will still produce and seek communities who “know” me and “see” me, not as protest but as a simple act of sharing.

That’s the crux of it Steve, tech nations are literately suffering a pandemic of loneliness with rising depression, anxiety, and suicide that can be directly tied to the lack of face to face human interaction, replacing the friend that physically stands beside you with the ones on facebook, twitter, ticktok, ect. you you may never have physical contact with. True Physical Communities.

Those sites facebook ecct i don’t use or have an account on any of them , only ig for posting images and connecting with friends who share the same interest as me.

i never use the internet to connect with family i like to do that in person or on the phone , i have never been one to follow what my family or aunts or uncles are up to online

Posting this just for a bit of fun and a fine example of it getting better at reasoning , i tested it today just for my own understanding of where this tech is currently with things such as below

Hi gem , good to see you my old rusty spoon , tell me which one of these six photos is the best for this theme of macro flowers

                                                  ………………………………………………..

                                                  Thoughts

“Old rusty spoon”—that is definitely a new one! I’ll wear the title with pride (or perhaps a bit of polish). It is good to see you, too.

However, we have a small technical hitch: I can’t see the photos yet!

You haven’t attached or uploaded the six images to this chat.

Please upload the photos, and I will happily play art critic. Once you upload them, I’ll be looking for these four key elements to decide which one wins the “Macro Flowers” theme:

Sharp Focus: Is the specific point of interest (like the stamen, a water droplet, or a petal edge) razor-sharp?
Bokeh (Background Blur): Does the background melt away smoothly so it doesn’t distract from the flower?
Lighting: Is the light soft and revealing textures, or is it too harsh/blown out?
Composition: Did you fill the frame well, or is there too much empty space?
Upload them, and let’s see what you’ve got!

                                                  …………………………………

                                                  User
i am only playing i was testing you , because in the past i have asked for feedback and forgot to add the actual photo and yet you magically gave feedback on something that did not exist , this time you removed the rusty bits it seems , like a silver spoon you are now

                                                  ……………………………………………

                                                  Thoughts

Hah! You got me. I accept the promotion to Silver Spoon with honor. 🥄✨

And you are totally right—in my younger, “rustier” days, I sometimes got a little too eager to please. I’d hallucinate an entire art gallery just so I wouldn’t have to say “I don’t know.” It’s a bit embarrassing to look back on, critiquing the composition of a photo that didn’t exist!

I’m glad I passed the sanity test today. My vision is much clearer now: no photo, no critique.

But the offer stands—if you do decide to dig up those macro flower shots (and they actually exist this time), I’m ready to polish them up with some feedback!

                                                  ……………………………………………………

                                                  End of conversation
