Abstract Photography

I thought I’d have a try at abstract photography having read Rob’s recent emails on the subject. I’ve tried to capture lines, shapes, light and colour, without any specific “subject”. Top image is as shot with the normal editing process. The bottom image is a more creative edit combining the original shot with its duplicate, flipped verically. Opactity of the overlaid image was reduced to 50%, the layers flattened and then a few random shapes recoloured.

I would appreciate your thoughts very much.

Can’t really get sharky with it, tough to critique a abstract to begin with, just as a geometric image it works well.

Very good, Stephen, it works for me in the main.  I like the shapes of the tiles a lot.  I like the choices of tiles coloured and their colours.  Agree with Tersha about the red, though I don’t come from such and educated perspective as her.  The one thing that I struggled with was the duplication of the yellow and blue top and bottom.  However having just looked back at the image I now find it pleasing!  Well done, you should think about doing more!

It’s a personal preference of mine, but when looking at an abstract photo I really am drawn to the ones where I have to take a second to figure out what I’m actually looking at.

I think you’ve really nailed that idea with the second image. My eyes had to concentrate to settle and if I didn’t have the context of the first image, it would’ve been even more difficult. Which I love. Because it’s so hard to do. So yeah, for me that second image is an absolute cracker.

I really like the second one, @stevet.  By flipping the original vertically, you give a dramatic feel of a change in perspective.   One suggestion I have is that you experiment with recoloring the mirror images of the yellow light at the bottom, using a less saturated color See if this strengthens further the very interesting feeling of a perspective change.  Have fun!
