I have a question. I am finding it difficult to generate much engagement here in Lightstalking. I can’t see a Forum with regular, frequent postings to engage with. Where do I go to find members willing to engage?

That’s not actually unusual. It is a relatively small forum and even some of the admin seem to be here a couple of times a week rather than having a large group visiting and active daily.

Most new members to old style forums (and this is one) get integrated by commenting on others’ submissions then sending in their own and being patient. Commenting takes effort  and sometimes people have a hard time figuring out what to say.

But, 17 comments from 7 different people is quite a lot by this forum’s standards.

Stephen, my opinion is there are many photos posted daily all over the various forum topics on this site. It can be fairly overwhelming, especially in a thread where multiple people are posting their photos.

If you want to get specific input concerning a photo you want to post, the forum section called: “The Shark Tank Feedback Forum,” is the best place to start a discussion for a photo. Or a few threads, each with a photo of yours that you want to discuss about.

I’ve noticed on this for about 15 to 30 concurrent conversations is about the ideal. If you have more than that than threads start going unanswered and if you have less than that, it feels a bit dead. It waxes and lanes, but we’re probably up the 10 to 15 at the moment so a bit low.

In the end, if you make a lot of activity, then you tend to receive a lot of comments. That has been the secret of a lot of the main members here. They’re starting new threads regularly and not waiting for old ones to be answered. And they make sure they get in and answer other peoples threads when they show up.

My particular approach when I’m looking for feedback is to post the thread and come back a day or two later to that thread, but I’m sure everyone has their own habits. The one thing I will say is that the quality of response you get here is a hell of a lot higher that most places and worth waiting for

Two other things: start with Forums => latest. It avoids searching through sub-forums. Responding to comments you do receive seems to encourage more interaction.

Having recently joined, I noticed the same thing and it is typical in all forums I have tried.

Here is what I have found:

Photos generally get less engagement than general threads about gear or techniques and most of the comments come from a handful of users. Multi-poster threads (such as weekly challenges) also see more engagement than single poster threads.

The nice thing is, I am not seeing the typical “My camera is better than your camera” threads here that are so common in every other photography forum site.
