                    Dramatic stunners.

When I see your photographs of the mountains, it always terrifies me the thought of being lost in them. They look pretty dangerous for somebody who doesn’t know that area.

Thanks Rob ( @admin-2 ), several folks a year go missing up there, most are found alive, but by no means all, Its usually the “experienced” hikers that go permanently go missing, If your hiking, say in Colorado, most of the trails are well worn hi ways as thousands folks travel them, many here are not much more than Goat trails that may see less than 100 hikers a year.
Like this “experienced” hiker last year. The area he disappeared in is near the middle of the bigger photo.

                        From Goolge
Minnesota hiker Grant Gardner, 38, went missing in late July 2025 during a solo trip through the Misty Moon Lake area and Cloud Peak in Wyoming’s Bighorn Mountains. Following a month-long search, a professional climbing team spotted his backpack, leading to the recovery of his body.
Here are the specific details regarding his disappearance and the recovery:

The Disappearance: Gardner embarked on a planned three-day hike beginning at the West Ten Sleep trailhead. He last contacted his wife on the evening of July 29, 2025, texting her to say he had reached the summit of Cloud Peak, but that the climb was more taxing than anticipated.
The Search: Because he did not return, the Big Horn County Sheriff’s Office launched a massive search and rescue operation on August 1, 2025. Despite deploying helicopters, electronic tracking, and specialized rescue teams, the search was officially suspended on August 20, 2025, as survival odds ran out.
The Recovery: On August 26, 2025, a professional climbing team spotted his backpack under a high-altitude ledge. Search crews were subsequently able to locate and recover his body.
Cause of Death: An autopsy conducted by the Big Horn County Coroner later determined that Gardner died from blunt force trauma to the head, and officially ruled his death an accident.

Same thing happens out here, mate – but often with just day hikers and tourists. Literally 90 minutes from the centre of Sydney and there in the blue Mountains people wander off the trail not realising how hard it is to see even from a very close distance. Some are found but some die of thirst which is not a nice way to go.
