Hello all…have been asked by a mate with a tiny budget but great cafe to take some pics for her new website. It’s Italian-inspired food, signature dish is mezze platter with homemade salami and proscuitto. I’m very new to manual settings on my little Pentax-kx but gaining confidence.
        Any tips greatly appreciated!

The most important thing for food photography is light, so try and snag lots of that! Do you have any fast lenses for your KX? if not, i think the 18-55 kit lens stops down to f/3.5 which should allow you a bit of defocussing to play with. Depending on how confident you are, try the camera in aperture priority at f/3.5. See if you can play around with points of focus too, you can do this by letting the camera autofocus in the middle say, and while keeping your finger pressed and holding the focus, move the camera around a bit over the plate…
If you’re doing whole plate shots, it’s worth letting them dress the table up, cutlery, glass of wine, vase etc… unless they want minimalist, in which case, use your imagination and go wild!

Great, thanks! The 18-55 I can get down to f/4.0 and I’ll practice with the focus points and light settings. (I’m driving my family mad photographing everything I cook before I let them eat it!) I think you’re spot on – food photography seems to be in the styling, so I’ll dress things up a bit…and as it’s Italian food that should work well.
Whaddya think to this practice shot?

Looks good! One suggestion, you could try cropping the photo to remove the chair and greenery for a different look. If you have a flash, use that rather than the pop up flash. If not, you may need to tone down the flash’s output.

Glad to know I’m not the only one driving the family crazy with food photos.

Thanks…is the cherry pic too washed out do you think? I didn’t use a flash at all on this one, but might have to invest in one over the weekend (oh dear, it’ll be tough spending money on camera gear…again :)).
The cafe I’m working for have a nice backdrop – overlooks a lake – so hopefully we won’t need too much cropping. But if all else fails my “stylist” is also our graphic designer (he’s actually only coming cos he can smell a free feed!)
