As I have learned more about composition and light, I’ve been sharing my learnings with my wife. She has become an increasingly astute critic. Here’s my chance to turn the tables on her. She took this sneak photo on her old apple cellphone while I was otherwise occupied.
Does it work as a photo? How could it be improved?

Gary, as you say, it’s a sneak photo with an old iPhone. A snapshot.
I like the shape of the tree and the composition, well done to your wife, but overall it’s kind of flat in tonality. You can work on that a go any way you want.

Allows Edits? YesIn terms of composition, this is a pretty sweet photograph. The interesting part comes into play when you notice how storytelling the photograph comes to be thanks to the human element involved in it (in this case, you, but it could be any other person for that matter). All the organic lines enhances the tension in a gentle way, and I really like that! Also Erik’s post-processing underexposing suggestion makes it even more interesting (in my personal opinion).

Allows Edits? YesI pretty much agree with Erik’s suggestion, the image looks bolder like this. The best thing about this photo is the composition, it really pulls you in.

I see some good composition elements. A person on the right, looking into the image, works because he has a large scene in front of him to look into. The path winding behind the person is a nice curving line. The unusual shape of trees fits in with what the photographer was photographing, an interesting subject in a wild woods. Including the person makes the image work. Erik’s color works nicely and it also makes the person lighter which makes sure we look at him first, then we follow the direction of the camera and ask, “What is he looking at?” At least that is what I did!
