Lovely image! This place really is a photographer’s playground. You’ve got great depth of field for this shot.

It would have been nice to shoot from slightly further to the left, to get separation between the spider body and the building, but I’m well aware there are other buildings over to the right that might spoil that idea.

            Thanks @gordonjames!

You could spend a week or more there exploring angles and compositions.

I was trying to get the two complex forms to interact in a way that worked (for me) but yes, you can move a couple of steps in any direction and find an interesting new shot idea.

@gordonjames – I went back to my Guggenheim Bilbao album and found this version.

Another cracking image, @aarongeis! Don’t you just hate compromises? I like the separation of body and building better, but the loss of that curved leg by shooting lower down weakens the second image.

All I can say it that I’d be pretty happy with either of them, and hope one day to get a chance to shoot the spider (it was fenced off by road-works barriers on the day I had at the Guggenheim).

There are some places on this planet that just seem to be designed for photographers to play with. Maybe we should start a list somewhere on this site. Guggenheim Bilbao would certainly be on my list, as would the Water-Mirror in Bordeaux. I’m not thinking simply of iconic buildings and views, but of places that are sufficiently varied and complex to bring out the creativity of the photographer rather than yet another view of (say) the Taj Mahal.

Where would you put on your list?

                  Thanks @gordonjames!

Your list is a great idea, Guggenheim Bilbao was a photo pilgrimage for me and I second your vote for it’s inclusion on any list of highlights for photographers interested in form.

My first photo pilgrimage was to Point Lobos, California. Edward Weston’s stomping grounds for abstracts of the rock formations there.

The Olympic Peninsula, Washington has rugged coastline and sublime old growth forest.

Bali, Indonesia has a wide variety of travel, cultural, architectural and landscape scenes.

The National Parks. Especially the ones in Utah and Africa.

Zanzibar has a entirely different look to Bali but covers the same categories.

I really enjoy photographing people and I love situations where people are happy to have their photo taken by a stranger. Big events like the Nottinghill Carnival in London are great for that.

Fun to think about all the memories and possibilities, thanks again!
