Allows Edits? YesThis time around we get to know a little more about Beaky, @ozride
• Tell us a little about yourself and your photography journey
Beaky here, I live in the South west of western Australia, in a small town called Yallingup. We moved here about 8 years ago from Karratha, which is in the north west of WA, where I grew up. “Why Beaky” many ask, I have been called that since I was 16 and I am just about to turn 60.I love living down here in the south west, it is very beautiful. I miss the Pilbara though; the country is so unique and amazing for photography. I am hoping to do a road trip/Photography trip in the near future.
• Hobbies & interests?
I love Traveling the outback, Motorcycling, gardening and Photography.
• What got you interested in photography?
I am not really sure what actually got me into photography, I think one of my friends at school got me started and my father liked to take a few shots here and there. Now it’s where a camera can take me and challenges, I guess.
• How long you have had an interest in photography?
I first got interested in Photography at school and have been on and off since. My first camera a Praktica 35mm which my father gave me. I got into underwater photography in my 20’s for a while, with a Nikonos iii. I then spent a few years as a freefall photographer doing stills with a Canon 5000D and Video with a Panasonic video camera. I wanted the 400D but working as a skydiving instructor/cameraman didn’t allow me to afford one.
I went back to general photography & underwater photography with a point and shoot in a housing when I moved back to Karratha. Freediving & spearfishing were my sport at the time with a bit of photography now and then, only the water is not as clear as you would like due to the large tides.
I started to feel the urge again for a good camera, so before I embarked on a road trip around Australia on my Bike. (55 days & 20,000K’s) I bought a canon 550D with the lens kit and started a Blog for the trip called Ozride, so I could share the trip with family and friends.
I have since bought a 5Diii and a swag of lenses and discovered Lightroom & Photoshop which is a whole new adventure in post-production. I liked the name Ozride, so I have kept using it.
• What is the best advice you have received so far regarding photography?
The best advice I have received so far regarding photography is to be yourself and just shoot what interests you.
• How do you maintain inspiration?
I can struggle with inspiration sometimes, but I think what helps me is, I like to discover new places and try different techniques.
• Do you have a favourite type of photography?
I really enjoy shooting Landscapes, astrophotography & wildlife.
• What is your favourite subject to shoot & why?
Astrophotography really intrigues me; I love nothing more than to be out bush with no light pollution to watch the stars and photograph the milky way or do time-lapse of the night skies. And Photographing birds is another favourite subject.
• How would you describe your photographic journey to date?
I am totally self-taught other than a few books and a Youtube video here and there. I did do an online Lightroom course with David Molnar and currently doing the Easy way Photography Photoshop course with Adam Williams.
• Are you currently involved with any photography projects? If so, what?
We are off to Gnaraloo in a fortnight and I will be spending a few good nights out doing some Astrophotography and night time time-lapse and the Humpback whales are migrating north, so I hope to get some photos of the whales breaching and playing.
• If you could only use one camera/lens combination for a year, which would you choose?
SIGMA sd Quattro H and the Sigma art series 14mm F1.8 DG HSM
• What is your favorite image right now?
o Yours?
o Someone else’s?
This photo of my favourite bird, the Wedge tailed eagle, taken by Peter Merritt. This is my all time favourite. https://www.viewbug.com/photo/70587219
There are so many I like of other peoples!
• Is there a photographer that inspires you?
• What is your biggest challenge when it comes to photography?
Composition, I struggle with it the most I think, I don’t have much of an artistic flare. But I am working on it and think that there has been a bit of improvement.
• Is there anything specific you intend to learn or improve in your photography?
Composition and patience, as I can’t just sit in one place for a long time. I get impatient and shift or give up. Quite often when I give up and move or pack up, I find that what I have been waiting for suddenly turns up.
• If people want to follow more of your work where should they go?
• Provide links to 3 or 4 of your favourite images that can be displayed with the interview

Allows Edits? YesI like to know more about Lightstalking community members.
Your mention of Pilbara reminds me one very interesting book: Hammond Innes – The Golden Soak, that I read as a children and liked a lot…

Thank you for your kind words. I am just waiting for the winter weather to change a bit and get a few clear nights for some astrophotography, rain, rain, rain! Can’t complain though the water tanks are full for summer. Some of Dahlias work has really inspired me.
