Allows Edits? YesThis time around we learn a little more about Beth, @loki
• Tell us a little about yourself and your photography journey.
o Where do you live
Mid Atlantic region, USA
o Hobbies & interests?
Photography, music, video games, military, marvel, sci-fi & horror books, movies & tv, guns, drones, computers, art, pretty much your bog standard nerd stuff.
o How long you have had an interest in photography
Since 2000. started out with a 3 mp digital p&s (Kodak DX3600, I think), moved on to a bridge camera (Kodak DX6490) and eventually bought a DSLR (Canon Rebel / 300D) when I was in college. shot a few weddings to upgrade my equipment and realized I hated people. actually, I knew that before I shot the weddings. but that’s when I decided to focus on landscapes and travel.
o What got you interested in photography?
Always been interested in art and computers. digital photography looked like a good mix of the two. and there was math and science and nerd stuff. and I enjoyed traveling.
• What is the best advice you have received so far regarding photography?
Don’t compare your work to others, be happy with what you create. if you’re not happy with your work then figure out why and change it.
• How do you maintain inspiration?
I’ve never lost inspiration. my biggest issue is finding time for photography.
• What is your favourite subject to shoot & why?
Mountains and landscapes. cause I’m usually by myself and away from people. And I like to travel. then probably foxes and other wildlife, cause I can take a few minutes to ride through the refuge on my commute home.
• Do you have a favourite type of photography?
Landscapes. but we don’t have many good views near where I live, so I mainly shoot wildlife and occasionally toys.
• How would you describe your photographic journey to date?
o Self taught?
o Formal training?
o Mentor?Does youtube count as self taught? I’ve pretty much learned everything from the internet. I’ve purchased a few courses online, but most of it was gathered from blogs and then video tutorials, once youtube really took off.
• Are you currently involved with any photography projects? If so, what?
Nope. I’ve got a couple of shots at the beach that I want to get, but I have to wait for the tourists to leave when the cold weather comes in. Other than that, I’m planning out my annual road trip in September.
• If you could only use one camera/lens combination for a year, which would you choose?
Depends on what I’m doing for the year. If I’m traveling for a year where I can shoot landscapes, I’d choose the GFX 50R and 32-64mm. If I’m stuck around my state, I’d pick the Sony A1 and 200-600mm cause all we have is birds and foxes.
• What is your favorite image right now?
o Yours? (provide a link if you wish)
o Someone else’s?Can’t say there’s just one to pick. there’s lots of photos I like, most are mountain landscapes, usually with a moody edit. But I couldn’t pick just one. And if I did it’d probably change in the next 30 seconds when I look at another photo.
• Is there a photographer that inspires you?
o Link?
Oy, just one? Nigel Danson (woodlands), Mads Peter Iverson (woodlands and landscapes), Joshua Cripps, Professor Hines (mainly his editing style, not as interested in street photography as he is), Mark Denny, Steve Hanna, Morten Hilmer… there’s others.
• What is your biggest challenge when it comes to photography?
Finding time. work usually gets in the way. I think I logged 76-ish hours during the last two weeks. the next two weeks are going to be even worse.
• Is there anything specific you intend to learn or improve in your photography?
I use a news aggregator service to follow blogs and youtube channels. If I find something interesting in an article or video I’ll usually google it to find out more.
I want to learn more about astrophotography this year. I have a star tracker that I haven’t had a chance to use yet.
• If people want to follow more of your work where should they go?
- Flickr – I have accounts for the others, but I don’t use any of them very much.
• Provide links to 3 or 4 of your favourite images that can be displayed with the interview
