This time around we learn a little more about John, @johnteate

        • Tell us a little about yourself and your photography journey.

        o Where do you live

I live in South Carolina in the USA. My wife and I moved here about 15 yrs ago to get out of the hustle and traffic of the major metro city of Atlanta, Georgia to retire in a rural setting.

        o Hobbies & interests?

Aside from photography I do a lot of white water kayaking on the rivers in my area. I am fortunate to now reside in an area that has a wonderful love of nature and I take advantage of this as often as possible. I also love working and training my German Shepherd, Nikita. At one time in my past I competed in obedience dog shows, now I just train for the fun of it. I am also an avid reader; SciFi, History, Fantasy, Horror.

o How long you have had an interest in photography

My first serious interest came with the purchase of my Canon AE1 back in the 1980s. From there I kept growing and trying new things.

At a very young age I was taking pictures with my instamatic camera when my family went on vacation, but the focus on the art really occurred with the AE1.

o What got you interested in photography?

From as far back as I can remember my father took photos of our family with a camera he bought in Japan while serving during the Korean war. So photography was always part of my life. As I grew I began to like the art of photography.

        • What is the best advice you have received so far regarding photography?

”Shoot what you love”. With so many options and styles of photography it can be hard to produce images that you really appreciate. I find my joy comes from images that reflect my passion for things I really love to be around. A spark of interest can keep me going for hours.

        • How do you maintain inspiration?

Reading and wandering. I’m out on rivers all the time, so wandering isn’t a problem. Photography is a hobby for me so I fall in and out of inspiration all the time. I’ve learned that if I wait something will come along and ”pow” I’m shooting again with a passion.

        • What is your favourite subject to shoot & why?

Water, in all shapes and forms. There is just an attraction to water features that show the movement and power of water which draws me to it. It can be any form; waves at the shore, river rapids, waterfalls or just a smooth creek flowing through a field. I guess if I dive deeper it is the water and the nature surrounding it that I love.

        • Do you have a favourite type of photography?

B&W, Macro and Nature photography are my favs.

        • How would you describe your photographic journey to date?

I am mostly self taught but I have taken a few workshops and classes along the way in the years I’ve been shooting. Now with YouTube I will spend some time watching videos of subjects that interest me.

        • Are you currently involved with any photography projects? If so, what?

Not really. As a hobby I do always have some path/project in mind but nothing really binding.

        • If you could only use one camera/lens combination for a year, which would you choose?

Canon 70-200. This is my current ”go to” combination.

        • What is your favorite image right now?

        o Yours?

Watcher In The Woods – This Eurasian Eagle Owl was so awesome to photograph. I will always remember this photo session.

        • Is there a photographer that inspires you?

I like many photographers and really cannot just place it to one in particular.

These three are at the top:

        1. Matt Burgess
        2. Tegan Owens
        3. Robin Carleton

        • What is your biggest challenge when it comes to photography?

Sitting in front of the computer. My whole career was in IT so I have been working in front of a computer for 40+ years. As everything changed from film to digital it was an easy transition for me. However, now that I’m retired I just want to be outside and not sitting at a computer.

        • Is there anything specific you intend to learn or improve in your photography?

I would like to improve my street photography. It is a challenge area for me and I believe it would really push me to do more work in this area. Beyond that I just follow my interest of the moment and see where it leads me.

        • If people want to follow more of your work where should they go?

I don’t really have much on any social media. I’ve added a gallery here at LS that I try to add/change for those interested.

        • Provide links to 3 or 4 of your favourite images that can be displayed with the interview

Hi John and thanks for the background story. Always great to hear how other people found their way into the world of photography. Must be a little daunting packing the camera gear into a kayak and hitting the rapids. No doubt you have some sturdy waterproof packaging?

Great to know more about you @johnteate

I wonder how many of us had our parents get us into photography. For me it was definitely my mum.
