Allows Edits? YesThis time around we get to know a little more about Rose Marie, @rgatscha
• Tell us a little about yourself and your photography journey.
o Where do you live? Hobbies & interests?
I am currently living in Vienna, Austria, my husband’s home town. After working and living in New York City and Morristown, New Jersey for the first 40 years of our marriage, we decided to retire to Vienna. Retirement offered me the time to further pursue my interest in photography and to satisfy my desire to sing in a chorus or choir. I sang gospel music with the Longfield Gospel Choir.
o What got you interested in photography?
As a child, I remember my Dad capturing memorable moments with his Polaroid Land camera at weddings, birthday parties, and holidays. It was magical to watch images appear right after a photo was taken. In a way, using a digital camera is a similar experience.
When I was 10, my Dad gave me a Kodak Brownie. I used it to take snap shots of my neighborhood friends in the urban setting of Newark, NJ. My friends were on the street all the time, and the simplicity of the camera made it fun and easy to shoot. I wish I had my hands on those shots now…
Years later I bought myself a 35 mm Olympus camera and faced a steep learning curve. With the Brownie, it was okay if there was blur in some photos, but with the Olympus it was possible to bring everything into focus if you understood the mechanisms at play. It was especially inhibiting to photograph people or moving objects. At that point, I turned to landscape photography because there I could take my time with composition and select the appropriate settings.
In 1975, I attended the School of Cytotechnology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center where I studied cancer detection at the light microscopic level. I was hired upon completion of the course, and one of my duties was to photograph cellular material for teaching purposes. I used a special Zeiss microscope with a camera attachment to photograph cells that exemplified various benign and malignant conditions. To select appropriate cellular material to represent different entities, I considered staining properties, i.e., colors exhibited by different types of cells and organization of groups of cells. It was also important to provide clues as to the origin of cell types so that students could make a differential diagnosis based on the images they were seeing.
The composition of the teaching images was critical to learning to make a correct diagnosis. In a sense, each image and its cellular population told a story, and it was up to students to be able to read it as accurately as possible. I think it was this experience with photomicroscopy that laid the groundwork for my continued interest in photography.
• How would you describe your photographic journey to date?
When I was living in Manhattan, I enrolled in several courses at The International Center of Photography. It was the first time I had taken formal classes, and the first time that I had an opportunity to think about what is possible and what other students of photography were doing.
I also discovered Meet-Up on line and joined a photography group that met regularly to shoot in different locations in NJ and NY. My first photography trip was with Loren Fisher to Arcadia National Park in Maine. That was followed by Loren’s workshops in Tuscany and twice in Iceland.
I find these kinds of trips invaluable because they offer technical information, creative approaches, and the camaraderie that comes when like-minded individuals learn and share together. For the same reason, I enjoy Light Stalking very much.
In Austria, I took two photography courses in Salzburg, one at the Fotohof Gallery on storytelling and one at the Summer Academy entitled the Notion of Home presented by Ahlam Shibli, a noted Palestinian photographer. Students’ work was exhibited at the conclusion of each course challenging us to complete the experience on a professional level.
• If you could only use one camera/lens combination for a year, which would you choose?
In 2020, just as the Covid scare was announced, I returned from a trip to Sri Lanka, India, and Dubai. I used my new full frame Sony a7000iii camera on that trip with an FE 2.8/24-70 lens. This all-purpose lens is perfect for landscapes, which are my all-time favorite type of image.
It also takes very nice wide angle and portrait images. I can imagine using my Sony with this lens most of the time, but realistically speaking, I would not have been able to get a good capture of the Puffins in Iceland without my FE 4/70-200 G OSS. I was very glad I had it.
• Are you currently involved with any photography projects? If so, what?
Although I have several photography projects in mind, one that comes to mind often is creating a family book. For me, technically speaking, it is a huge undertaking. It involves using photos on my computer, photos in old albums put together by family members, and adding relevant, and more importantly, interesting text. I have started my book in a manageable way by telling my version of the story of the birth of my twin siblings when I was 10 years old.
On my travels in India, I was impressed by the vibrant colors that abound and the lovely smiling faces that greeted me whenever I was moved to point my camera in someone’s direction. I have recently posted a group of my favorites on Flickr.
• What is your biggest challenge when it comes to photography?
There are times when I make a decision to grab my camera and walk out on the street in search of random, interesting subjects and scenes. Street photography is one area that I find the most challenging. You have to be ready for anything and everything; you have to react quickly to compose the shot and select the appropriate camera settings.
Lately, I’ve taken to limiting myself to a specific location and preparing the settings in advance. Then, wait and see. “See” being the operative word.
• Is there a photographer that inspires you?
Daniel Arnold is a street photographer I admire and follow on Instagram. He gets up close and personal with people capturing memorable moments in time without their knowing or reacting, and he shoots scenes on the street that can tell a story.
If you want to know more about him, he was featured in the Photo Booth section of the January 2022 issue of The New Yorker.
• Do you have a favourite type of photography? Provide 3 or 4 of your favourite images that can be displayed with the interview
I love almost every genre of photography, but my absolute favorites are Landscapes, Black/White) and Macro.
Landscapes create depths and moods that allow the viewer to dream
I love the sharp contrast of textures that can be achieved with B/W because it emphasizes details that might otherwise be lost in color, and it lends itself to abstract images.
Macro brings the viewer into worlds unseen.
• If people want to follow more of your work where should they go?
I have postings on Instagram, Flickr and Facebook.
