Hi folks,
My name is Tom. I live in Melbourne, Australia and have enjoyed taking photos as a hobby for many years. Coming from the city that had the world’s longest cumulative periods of lockdown, I took up astronomy as a new hobby and now want to get into astrophotography.
I’m retired so I have plenty of time to dedicate to this pursuit.
My background is in lecturing with the specialty topic of diagnostic imaging / radiology.
Bad timing with the date and time of this post but it was afternoon in Melbourne when I wrote it. 🙂
I look forward to learning from you all.
Cheers,
Tom.
PS: The first photo was taken at a dark site in Heathcote and the second was taken within Melbourne’s light polluted skies.

Allows Edits? YesHi there @tommo, and welcome to our place! Nice background, and curiously related to photography indeed. Love the moody vibe from your astroshots, thanks for sharing and feel free to roam the entire forum as well.

Allows Edits? YesHi Tom and like Federico said Welcome to Ls it is good to have you here , nice photos above there really is a lot of benefit to get to a dark sky area if its possible like you have here in the first photo it just goes to show how much we don’t see up in the night sky when living in and around a city with the light pollution , Thanks for posting these shots and hope to see more of your work 🙂

Thanks Patrick. I appreciate the way in which you and Federico have been very welcoming and providing input right from the start.
It was fantastic to have JasenkaG contact me straight away as a guide and provide the direction she did.
Rob has done a fabulous job in organising this community of photography enthusiasts.

Allows Edits? YesWelcome to the site @tommo
Have you ever been able to get more detail in Melbourne? I remember years ago reading about at astrophotogarpher from Singapore who got some quite stunning results despite the light polution there. Never could emulate his results though.

Thanks Rob.
Not sure yet about getting reasonable night scapes in Melbourne. I’ll note that as a personal challenge. 🙂

Hi Dahlia,
Thanks for the welcome.
I’m going dark this weekend for some night scape photography near Heathcote. Looking forward to making progress with this. I’ll be testing a Samyang 135 mm F2.0 lens.Dahlia, could you please tell me where to post more photos? Is it here?
Where can I find the Shark Tank?Cheers,
Tom.-

Allows Edits? YesHi Tom, that sounds great. Look forward to seeing what you capture. The Samyang 135mm f/2 is a great lens and you can try some nebulae, clusters and galaxies with that.
To create a new topic, you will need to do it in the General chit chat forum. Here is the link https://lightstalking.us/forums/forum/light-stalking-group/ Scroll to the bottom where you see a box and create a new topic there.
Here is the link to the shark tank feedback forum https://lightstalking.us/forums/forum/the-shark-tank/
Hope this helps and let us know if you have any questions 🙂

Thanks for those details Dahlia.
What does it mean to “Allow Edits?” in a profile. I have this as a “No” without really knowing what my setting means.-

Allows Edits? YesHi Tom, if you set “Allow edits” to “No” it means that you do not want other members in this forum to edit your photo. This is particularly useful when you post something in the shark tank feedback forum and some members may like to make an edit to show how the image can be improved. Hope this helps 🙂
