Lake Superior can captivate you like no other place. The power of this fresh body of water is remarkable. Surfers go out there and ride the waves even in negative temps. As in my last picture of the Pheasant I am working on editing of photos more. This photo placed 3rd in a 7 state regional competition now I would like you all to tell me what I can do better. Thanks your input is amazing and I am happy to be part of this site.

Congratulations on the competition. I like the composition and framing. I might be tempted to try a 1:2 panorama crop. The rocks lower left don’t add much and you wind up with a fair amount of open water and cloud–more than might be needed to make your point. It might also bring the ice hanging from the rocks into greater prominence.
It must have been a very dull day for ISO 800 and f/8 to produce a 1/30 second shutter speed. A faster shutter speed could have produced a sharper image on the moving waves and also reduced the blowouts in the surf and the cloud, giving more texture to the image.

I can see your point I do have some faster shutter speeds of 1/60 but the lost the clouds. I do have a few more of this shot and will try the 1:2 for sure

Allows Edits? YesI definitely prefer this crop Tim, One of my editing progresses if always to ask myself what I don’t see, and for me the glaring thing that doesn’t stand out in the photo is in the name it’s self and what I find the most interesting feature which it the hollow part of the rock, you could use the wave and just in front of the froth from the corner up as a leading line all the way to the hollow, I just did a mask in LR flowing that and bumped the clarity lowered the blacks and bumped the highlights in a very quick edit, with the raw file and a little more care in processing then I put into it I think it would really benefit the composition.
My fast and sloppy example.

I like the edit but in the case of Lake Superior the water in your picture is to blue. The water on lake superior is more of a greenish color which makes in unique. To me anyway maybe your edit in B&W???

I live on the Ocean and it’s amazing all the colors the water can take on. I did blue because yours is a pale blue color. Take your color picker in Photoshop or LR and see. So if the water is green all the time then that answers your question on what you could do better. Bring in the green color to the water and I think you will really like it. It will be more realistic.
