I don’t often shoot directly into woodland. Too busy? Too much or too little contrast? Any and all feedback welcome, of course. This is Shark Tank.

Steve i actually like images like this , the misty conditions help to separate the scene and create nice depth , i love condition like this the fog or mist can sometimes linger all day , One small idea that i think can never do any harm and that is with shots like this ( quiet , lonely , moody ) is after you have got the shot you want simply insert yourself into the composition , maybe wearing your hat ( in your profile picture ) with your back to the camera as if to be looking peering into the distance , hand maybe resting on a tree for seperation ( like resting or just taking it all in ) The good thing is even if you never use the image publically it causes no harm to have it in your archive.

But on a personal level i would much rather see this image with the human element included i feel it would elevate the interest a little more although as i say i do like it as is 🙂

“I would never apologize for photographing rocks. Rocks can be very beautiful. But, yes, people have asked why I don’t put people into my pictures of the natural scene. I respond, there are always two people in every picture: the photographer and the viewer. That usually doesn’t go over at all.” Ansel Adams

I seldom try to include people in my landscapes. Usually when I do, it is, as you say, I try to make them anonymous: too distant to identify as individuals or back to the scene. Often, they are present to provide scale. One person on a now long defunct photo site would frequently comment on my beach-scapes that they suggested loneliness. I preferred to think “solitude”.  I think that I omit people is likely part of my vision. I tend to study people more than interact directly.

I don’t know that it’s too busy, but I do think the bright bushes in the foreground aren’t drawing my eye to where you probbably want them to be (which I would place on the fallen tree. I think you need to rework the mid-greys in the foreground and possibly the midground as a result.

This is one of those shots I literally would have spent literal days on in a darkroom cos I think the basic scene is worth working on.

Thanks for this. I intentionally brightened the green channel to increase contrast. You are right. The fallen trunk was the center of interest for me. I’ll do some more work.

Here’s a revision. Hmmm. On-screen here, it is even darker than on my monitor off-site.Revision

                    Ok now we’re talking!!!

id be dodging the main fallen tree a bit. In fact from there i would be exclusively editing in masks rather than universally. Huge improvement for me though.

Thanks. I did mask several areas including the fallen tree trunk. On my monitor in. LR, it is a bit brighter than showing here.
