Hey, welcome to the site! This thread is to introduce yourself to the rest of the community with a few sentences about yourself!

I’ll go first.

I am Rob Wood – the founder of Light Stalking. I got into photography because my mum was a very serious amateur photographer who was published in a few photography magazines when I was a kid. We even had a purpose built darkroom when I was young.

My first SLR was the Canon AE-1 and I continued taking photography courses through high school and learned all about working in a darkroom at that time (both school and home).

I always maintained a pretty strong interest in photography, but really started taking it seriously again when I combined my love of writing, photography and websites to build Light Stalking in 2009. At that point, I realised there was a LOT more to learn.

Hi 🙂 I’m new to the site. I have loved photography since I was very little. I used to practice on my dad’s old contax at home. I did some photography courses before I started my studies (colour, black and white and darkroom), but that was many ears ago. I was a slow convert to digital, but finally did a DSLR course 3 years ago and I have been teaching myself photoshop and lightroom with the help of Scott Kelby’s books.

I mostly take pictures of my family, but I would like to do more with it and think constructive feedback is crucial at this point.

I have a canon 60D with a few lenses and a lensbaby. I also sometimes use a Diana lomo camera when I’m feeling hipstery 😉

Hello all, my name is Anthony. I have a Canon T4i with several lenses, a 50mm, 18mm-55mm, 70mm-300mm and a 17mm to 85mm – all Canon lenses. I mainly shoot motorcycle and nature related shots, but I also shoot a wide range of other topics.

I’m here looking to get better at my craft. I get lots of compliments, but I feel it is from people who really don’t know what they are talking about, after all, their camera is just a small phone and they are looking at the pictures on a tiny screen.

Hi, I’m Cheryl. I’m actually sitting in a waiting room before undergoing hip replacement surgery and hoping to finish this before I “go in”! I would MUCH rather be taking photos. I love photography and find myself looking at EVERYTHING in a different way since getting “serious” about the craft. I use a Canon Rebel T5i (frequently get the letters and number in the wrong order). I have relied mostly on great timing and good luck for my photos, but have begun working on planning and post-processing. I am looking forward to being part of this group – and to resuming my photography post-recovery!

Hi Folks, My name is Doug. I’m interested in all sorts of photography and have heaps to learn. Currently using a D610 and D810, usually coupled with either Nikon 28-300mm zoom for street shots, or when I’m in the bush, Sigma 50-500mm zoom, I call it my Hoover because it sucks up so much dust :), I’m always having to clean my sensor, errgh! But not a bad lens for the price.

Hello, happened to stumble upon this site. I love photography and have had a relaxed business off and on for the last 10 years. I have nine children, so I am limited in my time. I love art in general and I find photography gives me an outlet for pursuing it. I started up with clients this past summer and am opening up a studio in January with artificial lighting which is new to me. I love working with natural light and the sun, to date I have not used reflectors, or any artificial lights, so again, this is a whole new way of thinking about photography. Hoping to learn from this site. I am hoping to purchase a new camera soon, but right now am working with my workhorse since 2006, a Nikon D200 with a number of lenses.

I’m John and I live in the south of France. I am interested in the whole process of photography but am trying to progress in black & white printing. Printing seems far and away the hardest part of the post shoot work and would be interested in joining anyone else interested in this aspect.

I now use Nikon having moved from Olympus because of the insecurity in that company. I am also considering going back to film with a Bronika I have just bought.

My name is Don but I you may have been gunned down by me in Halo under my gamertag el_don_almighty, in which case I apologize…a little.

I started with an AE-1 35 years ago and now a pair of Canon 70D bodies with the 18mm prime and the new Sigma 35mm f1.4 art lens as my new favorites. I love faces, but I am terrible at lighting. Basically, I am terrible at still photography.

Most of my work is actually in video where I shoot live music for local bands.

But my love is in photography and I wish I was better understanding how to capture that personal essence in a portrait.

As I get older, I realize a memory is one of the most precious gifts I can offer and a truly great photo is an excellent way for someone to share a memory with others.

I want desperately to help people give photos to others.

I got very frustrated with my results using my CP or point and shoots, and finally bought a Nikon D610 this year. A whole new world has opened up, and there is so much to learn! I introduced myself over a year ago and before I could figure out how to post a photograph, life got in the way and I am just making my way back here. I just began with digital 3 years ago. I would like to post some photos to Shark Tank get some feedback. I finally got a flicker account going. I have read how to paste the link from Flicker but not sure if I need to reduce the size of the image somehow? Perhaps someone can point me to this information?

I am a retired mechanical engineer, and I live in the mountains of North Carolina with my wife and our two Belgian Sheepdogs. We pay the bills and the dogs run the house.
I grew up in NYC and in my early thirties moved to South Florida. While I lived in Manhattan, I worked as an engineer and photography took up most of my spare time. I gathered quite a bit of photo equipment and accessories and an enormous collection of prints and transparencies. Then, shortly after moving to South Florida, I had an experience that was enough to kill the passion I had for photography. Through an act of vandalism, all my photography gear was stolen and all of my negatives, transparencies, and prints were emptied into a tub of hot water. Well over 10,000 pieces down the drain. (No pun intended) That day, something more than camera gear and images were taken from me. I gave up photography for a long time. Then it happened. We moved to the mountains, I bought a camera, and once again . . . I was hooked. Now I have so much time to make up. And what I did then was so different from what’s available now. Between the digital and all the post production tools, I’m just loving it. There’s so much out there to learn from. Thank you Jason Row for what looks like a really good site!

Hello, I am Justin. I am currently 26 and have grown up shooting digital my whole life in Minneapolis, MN.

I run both a Nikon D200 and a D3100 with a 50mm prime and an 18-135mm. I started out with a Canon Powershot A400 when I was 12, but have used some film cameras to a small extent before that.

What I would really like to accomplish is to learn how to use lighting to make my pictures phenomenal! I think I have composition down, but I’ll usually blow out my whites in the same picture.

Robert, your story is killing me. At first I couldn’t imagine the cruelty of someone who would destroy photos in a bathtub, but I figure it was mindless kids. NO better than animals.

I have set up a FreeNAS server to act as my own backup storage locally as well as offsite storage in the cloud for all my photos.

I even rotate a hard drive back and forth with a buddy that lives in Tucson. Sure, It’s a nuclear target because of the AFB, but it’s pretty safe from most other natural disasters

Hello my name is Jebel and my journey began in a galaxy far far away. Just kidding, caught up on Star Wars hype. My father was an amateur photographer growing up. I really got into photography with my iPhone years later. More recently 2 years ago I bought my first Canon 7d Mark 2.

This time photography had a purpose of capturing images of the great parties I put together. I’m a DJ of 13 years and needed more images of myself for social media. Then I really started to study composition, read a few books, and exhausted Lynda.com for help videos.

Hi, I’m ravi. Am based in mauritius island. I’m very passionate about landscape photography, long exposures. I’ve been taking photos in auto mode for the past 4 years with my Nikon D3000 until this year when I signed up for some photography courses on udemy. Since then I no longer touch the auto mode. I now shoot mainly in M mode or A mode. I’ve also been editing my photos in lightroom and photoshop. Being very serious about photography, i started purchasing a number of kits from ebay to finally got myself the nikon d810 with nikkor 14-24mm lens and filter kits – CPL, ND16, ND1000. I’m still waiting for the shipment of a vanguard tripod/ballhead. I’m Tim and I started the world of photography back in 1972 using a Super 8mm movie camera. I converted to a film camera shortly thereafter. For years I would pick the camera up and put it back down in frustration. I was in the zone of taking snapshots. 2008 I converted to digital, again, taking snapshots. The learning curve using a digital DSLR was quite steep. 2010 I discovered a local weekly meet and shoot group. This was a crucial turning point in learning how to create photos versus simple snapshots. The added area of OCF, choosing your location, and bringing your vision from mental to reality became the common goal for everyone. Our main theme is: “What are you going to shoot? Why are you shooting it? How are you going to shoot it?” Gear: Nikon D800e, pro grade lens, sppedlites, modifiers, strobes.

Avid shooter and a Canon guy. I primarily shoot with the 70D but still have my old T3i as a backup (I just love that little camera).

Go to lenses are the Canon 50mm 1.8 and the Canon 85 mm 1.8 As far as my walk-around zoom, it is the Canon 18-200 3.5-5.6 These three lenses make up about 90% of my shooting. I do have a Canon 10-22 f. 3.5-4.5 that gets a little use and a Sigma 100-300 with macro that is probably just taking up space in my bag most of the time. 😉

Hi, I’m Cindy. I’m a transplanted Texan living on the prairies of Saskatchewan, Canada. My love for photography started at an early age. I took a couple of photography courses, but I found it hard to juggle life and family with my creative side. Now that my kids are grown and family life has changed, I picked up my camera again. Over the last 5 years I’ve been able to spend more time chasing the “perfect sunset, landscape, etc.”. Friends have started to ask for family portraits. I’ve also volunteered at Help Portrait for the last 5 years which I find rewarding and also a good learning experience with portraits. Hi everyone. I am Bobbie. I’ve loved photography since forever. I took classes in high school and in college, and dabbled a bit with it here and there long ago. I had my own dark room and all. They life got in the way more and I did less with my photography, but yet always had a camera around me. I retired early from my career as a park ranger, and now my husband and I travel the United States in our RV and work seasonal jobs to supplement. I’m doing more and more with my photography though and have sold nature/wildlife calendars the last two years with some success, but I know I need some good critiques done on some of my photos and there is always so much more to learn! I backpack and hike A LOT and take many, many photos while doing so! My two biggest passions in life are nature and photography, so I’m just trying my best to meld the two together. My name is Crystal I currently shoot Canon EOS 40D with 17-85mm and 28-135mm. I am a wedding and portrait photographer. I am relatively new to pro photography. I have always had a passion for this I am very creative and willing to learn many different ways of shooting. Only in the past 3 years has my need for photography to become more than just a hobby. I am employed by a brilliant photographer (not so easy to get along with) but brilliant all the same. He has taken me under his wing and taught me so much and Im still learning everyday. One of the negatives is, it is his company and he has his way that he likes and that is perfectly fine but I want (need) to learn different ways so I can find the way that suits me.
I need more knowledge in the mechanics of the camera and I know that. My employer says I have the eye that can’t be taught so Im in good shape because I can learn everything else. Well I am looking forward to seeing all this has to offer/teach me. And thank you in advance for if any and all the knowledge and ins and outs that you might offer me.

I’m Kall, I use a Nikon D90 and I’m an amateur. I recently acquired my dslr and I try to learn as much as possible. I like landscapes, monuments and taking pictures of people in law light conditions (like a scene of multiple fishermen on a bridge during the night, with all the tricks that night lights make with people) but with no use of flash. I am self taught and I do my best to be better everyday.

Hello Everyone. My name is Bill. I started using an Agfa Box Camera when I was 10 yrs.old. I next purchased an 8mm camera and did a great deal of home movies in my teens. I later got into 35mm in the 70’s. I was assigned to a unit(where I worked) and was able to take several photography courses, and started seriously using 35mm. In the mid-80’s I purchased two large format cameras, and used 8 x 10, 5 x 7, and 4 x 5 formats. I set up a dark room in my basement and was totally enthralled with it. In the early 90’s I got into weddings and purchased a Blad and several used lenses. I retired in 1999 and moved to Va., and eventually did some work for the local newspaper. I was able to see changes coming, so I sold my Blads, and large format cameras, and after several years, switched from film to digital. I am now using a Nikon P7100, having sold all of my slr’s and lenses.
So, I Have been around the block, but I still enjoy capturing that “perfect” image, whether it be of the grandkids or from the Rim of the Grand Canyon. I look forward to learning from y’all. Glad to be here.

Hi, my name is Sabine. I started photographing as a kid, my first camera being a compact Minolta with 110film and later when I was expecting my first baby bought my first SLR, a Canon AE-1. I tried my best to learn but never got deeply into it until after a break of a few years because all my equipment had been stolen when buying my first digital SLR, then Pentax. I went back to Canon in 2011, joined FB groups and read as much as I had time to learn but it seems to never end that learning part 🙂 I love photography, mostly children and landscapes and some macro inbetween and lately I dared to shoot grown ups which I find quite challenging. I have an 18-55mm, and a 55-200mm kit lens, plus I added a Samyang 14mm wide angle lens. Only had my new camera a few weeks when I shot my first aurora …. now I’m addicted. I’m rstcrat from the beautiful Okanagan Valley in BC Canada. My photog adventures started wa-a-a-ay back with a Brownie Starflash and progressed through the film era to end (or so I thought) with my old Canon AE-1 and a Nikkor 70-210 lens.
I’ve been away from the photography scene for many years but, after stumbling upon several enlightening FB sites, decided it might be time to try again.
Since retirement income doesn’t allow the expense of a true DSLR plus the usual bag of glass, I’ve just purchased a simple Nikon P610 ‘bridge’ type camera and, with your input, am hoping to relearn as I go.

I’m Elin, a happy amateur through 50 or so years, nearly bankrupting my family during the first years by shooting all and everything with a Kodak – until I gained access to darkroom facilities at school. Shot later with wonderful Olympus and Pentax film cameras until i bought my first digital Canon EOS 350 in early 2000. I once was possessed by the misconception that gear = quality so I worked my way through EOS 450 and 600 until I bought a 6D and have now acquired a good variety of lenses.
Have used Lightroom for a couple of years and am beginning the wander into the Photoshop jungle, which sometimes makes me long for the film, the darkroom and experimenting with camera obscura and other old techniques….the possibilities are endless – art is great – life is short, especially if one has a time consuming job on the side. There is so much to learn and I feel that I am just beginning….
I found this site by coincidence, don´t remember how, and to me it is a treasure: The tutorials (short, to the point, inspiring and informative), the forums (friendly and relaxed) and most importantly the Shark Tank. I´d like to thank Rob for this great site as well as the contributors to the Shark Tank for their kind and constructive criticism.

Hi, I’m relatively new to photography. In 2010 I was in Kuwait on a 1 year contract and had left my guitar behind. I had purposely decided to take a break from my music but missed creating. So I decided to choose an art that was totally, entirely foreign to my natural bent. I had no appreciation for visual art and couldn’t draw to save my life, so I decided to take up photography.

I bought a Sony NEX5 with the kit lenses, eventtually bought some other lenses and settled on a favorite Super Takumar 50mm 1.4. After a few years I decided to force myself to get out of P mode and start learning the mechanics and composition so I picked up a Fuji x100s.

For the past two years I’ve been completing my MS in IT Management and sneaking in a little photography where I can. I finished it this month so I’m treating myself by paying more attention to my art and am now learning to use off-camera flash.

Greetings from the land of the midnight sun, Alaska. My introduction to photography came via my other passion of hiking with my three German Shorthaired Pointers and later on my husband, who believed I had ‘the eye’ and gave me my first SLR Nikon D40. Not knowing anything about photography or cameras, I bought myself a little Gateway PS (= point and shoot) that I took along on the hikes for several years. By golly, it took fabulous photos, especially in the macro range! Taking close-ups was my initial focus and I clicked away, one flower at a time and turned them into photo cards that people, to whom I gave them as a gift, told me were too nice to write and mail. So they framed them. I decided it’s perhaps time to do a little more learning and I thought all I need in life is a little Gateway and a class and I am good to go. How embarrassed and totally overwhelmed I was when I walked in and saw the equipment, and I mean EQUIPMENT. I got so scared I wanted to drop out of class and I told the instructor. The instructor followed up with me and convinced me to come with the old Nikon F2A I had inherited from my husband’s relative, a 35mm Nikon . So I learned the basics of photography with it.
Along comes Winter and my husband gave me a D40 and I began to dive deeper into photography, still focused on macro but by now I have widened the lens and mind to include landscape, still life and dogs in my repertoire. People photography has been my recent stretch but to be honest it is not my forte. I always feel I am invading someone’s privacy. I feel so awkward, as if I am spying and snooping and phony. These days I own a Nikon D3200 and this one is the first camera that has really grown onto me. I love that camera and I feel really comfortable using it. Until I outgrow it, I will not buy anything new, as I have invested in some lenses for this one, too.
So, here I am, learning, learning and eager to learn some more. I have liked you on FB and have diligently read just about every blog. Once I retire from my job as a high school teacher in Anchorage, I would like to expand my photography horizon. Right now I am concerned with setting the foundation for when this day comes. My Facebook page – Antje Carlson Photography – is something you can take a look at to see what I am up to and what kind of photography I do. My name is Michael Edwards and I enjoy photographing Landscapes, Cityscapes and Seascapes.
My cameras are Canon D60, Canon EOS T3, a small Olympus Stylus 800.
Primarily I use my 1 1/2 year old T3 as the D60 is very slow to the T3(so now is used primarily as a backup and tripod unit) and seldom use the Olympus.
I learn something every day – usually by using the internet and the email s received.

Due to the peed I tend to use the T3 with multiple shots for comparison point of view.

My equipment is somewhat older than I would like but being on a retired budget …..!

I am John. I have been am amateur photographer for many years. My first SLR camera was a 35mm Nikon and I have continued to use Nikon. I have been primarily a landscape/nature photographer until recently when I got the opportunity to become a professional real estate photographer. While I really like this work, I still love to take photos of the landscape and would like to get good enough in this area to sell some of my photos. I currently use a Nikon D3200 and a D7100. Since the D7100 is my most recent purchase, I am still learning the great features of this camera. When combined with my Nikon 10mm to 24mm lens, it takes some great photos especially of interiors. However, I know I can take better photos especially my first love, landscape photography.

Hi, My name is Susan and I now have a Nikon D5200…but I hope to eventually get a full frame D750 when I can afford it. I first started taking pictures as a kid…with my Brownie camera…and playing around with trick perspective shots with my grandmother. then, in my early 20s, I got much more serious about photography. However, back then..I could not practice enough to get very good, because all there was then, was film…and I could not afford to pay for very much film and processing. When digital cameras became more mainstream and affordable, and the MP’s had reached 8 to 10 MP’s…I was finally able to practice and I have improved a great deal since I got my first DSLR. I still have plenty to improve on, and there are many photographers who take better pictures than I do…but I will continue improving. I have finally gotten a few of my photographs accepted by a stock agency. Nothing has sold yet..but at least I have been accepted. I really like the idea behind this site. My name is Carl, I’ve been taking pictures for a very long time. as a started getting to know my 35mm slr cameras I was intrigued with candid photography where my subjects often never knew I was taking pictures. I still prefer that type of photography. However I have not been very active for far too long.

I have had my Canon EOS 450D for a while and have been taking photos, in both pre programmed and non programmed areas, without really fully understanding what I have been doing in the non programmed areas. I purchased add on wide angle and macro lenses but nothing more.

I have done a fair bit of research, but I think it’s now time to put it all together as I have come to a unique area in Australia [lots of sunrises, sunsets, beaches & shells, birdlife, old buildings, and the occasional relic] and I want to get the most from my experience, including taking photographs.

I thought it will be interesting coming onto the forum to ‘learn’ more about photography.

I’ve been a hobbyist photographer for over 60 years. Since my first experience in my parents basement watching the magic appear on photo paper under the small red bulb, to the digital world of today, I have always dabbled, but not very deeply into photography. It seems that working and moving through the stages of life always got in the way of a serious photography pursuit.

My recent retirement drew me back into a more serious photography. It was finally time. I was blessed to live in an active adult community in Arizona that had a local Camera Club. With the camera classes they offered to refresh my knowledge of ISO, Aperture and Shutter Speed and all the other magic buttons on my new digital camera, I was off to the races. We have a great group, eager to share information and get out with our cameras in this magical part of the country that gave us Arizona Highways and many of the works of Ansel Adams.

This took me through a progression, in the past few years, from a Nikon D5100, to a Nikon D7100 and finally to a Nikon D750 full frame and a few Nikkor lenses. With the D750, I think I have now recovered from G.A.S., or Gear Acquisition Syndrome.

It also introduced me to the second photo world of post processing, a complete new experience from the old film days. It has been quite a learning curve from Picasa to Adobe Elements, and now on to Lightroom CC and Photoshop CC. If there was a weak link in my knowledge, it is in the great world of post processing, which I still have plenty of room to grow.

I have found many of the articles on the Light Stalking site helpful and it helped diagnose my G.A.S.

I got to know my way around the darkroom at 5 or 6 years of age. not really being faithful to any brand of camera I’ve always had a point + shoot or an SLR, right now I have a Pentax k5ii and a Panasonic fz1000 (Santa was good to me last year), I did lose some interest in photography when digital seemed to take over but got it back about 4 years ago when a friend sold me a higher end point + shoot Sony. Hi, I bought my first 35MM camera in 1968. I was doing a one year walking tour in SE Asia at the time. I clicked that camera as much as I had time for. I captured some pretty good slides back then. My name is John, I’ve enjoyed photography since I was a kid. I learned the basics of photography way back in high school on B&W film.

I had been a way from photography until about five years ago when I finally got a DSLR (Nikon D90.) During my time away from snapping pictures, I occupied my hobby-time by officiating sports, mostly football, softball and lacrosse. Since retiring from officiating football and softball (I continue refereeing lacrosse) I’ve been able to spend more time taking pictures. Of course since I spent a lot of time the field all those years I now take mostly sports photos, primarily lacrosse since a majority of people here in Georgia (US) don’t know the sport well and don’t take pictures of their kids doing so.

I am interested in expanding my knowledge to other areas of photography like portraits and landscapes. I’m learning that other than the parents of the kids playing sports, there isn’t a big following of sports photos. I hope to learn how to change that in the near future with your help, and expand my focus to other areas.

Hi all! I’m Christina. I am currently using a Canon Rebel and I am trying to develop my love for photography and pursue it as a life-long career.
Previously, I have taken some photography classes, mostly in high school, and absolutely loved pinhole cameras and developing in a darkroom. One of my dreams would be to be able to go back into a darkroom and continue using pinhole cameras since I was only able to use them for a very short amount of time.
At the moment, I am trying to find a specialty but I have always been drawn to portrait photography and landscape photography. But really, I would love to do it all (in an ideal world, I guess)! Hi! I am totally new to photography, but have wanted to pick it up as a hobby for a while. I’ve had my camera (a Canon Rebel 5i) only for a few days and have been reading a lot about how to use it. So far I mainly have been taking photos of my kids. My name is Stan and I’ve loved photography since high school, but could never seem to afford to take enough photos to get good at it, until the advent of digital photography. I started out with an Epson 640 x 480 camera when they were the highest resolution available. I graduated to 2 M-megapixels, then 5 (Sony DSC F707) then a Canon 350XT and now a mirrorless Samsung NX3000.

My passion is landscape photography and I usually shoot 3 exposure HDR, but try to keep them natural looking. I am hoping to learn more about my hobby so I can be a better landscape photographer and post-processor.

Hi, y’all. Mike here from North Richland Hills, Tx. Just joined the site. First started photography in the navy with a yashica in the 70’s. As life goes didn’t do any after that til about several years ago. Started with a canon point & shoot, then picked up a Nikon D5300 & some ebooks from photzy, dp insiders & northrup photography.  Got a D610 a couple yrs ago. Got GAS(gear aquirement syndrome), so I have a few lenses. 50,85,70-200,24-70,70-300,24-120. Most are VR. Do all kinds of photos that I can. Did my nieces wedding last yr. Told her not to expect anything, but gave all the jpegs. I kept the raws til I learn post processing.  She seemed pleased. Well that’s about it. Still learning & creating good photos I hope, even tho I think most are junk. I should stop thinking that way cause I delete alot of them. Hello everyone.
