Hi
Back in the 1980s I worked as a photographer doing mainly pack shots for print advertising and brochures. I worked with 35mm cameras, a Mamiya 645 and a Linhof 4 x 5 view camera, although I generally used a 6×9 film adaptor on that.
After a few years I moved on to other fields and have now returned to photography for my own pleasure, rather than needing it to pay the rent. This was kick-started by a trip to the Isle of Man earlier this year to watch the TT Races. I took along my Canon G11 (great image quality but so-so zoom) and also purchased a Sony DSC-HX50V (OK image quality and better 20X optical zoom). Traveling from South Africa, weight and size are a factor so I reckoned that the two cameras would cover most of my bases – especially as the Sony HD video is pretty good as well.
Anyway, I came back with some great action shots of the bikes taken at various vantage points around the island, but then started thinking about how much better the shots could have been if I had used a better camera and lenses.
Cue some research and a buying spree which resulted in the acquisition of a Canon 7D, Canon 70 – 300mm IS USM zoom and Canon EFS 15 – 85 zoom. I have had a couple of the cheaper Canon DSLRs in the past but this camera is in a slightly different league to my old 450D.
I also need to get to grips with Lightroom and probably Photoshop as well, so I am grateful to have found this site which I am sure will help me to achieve some degree of proficiency.
Plus I am really looking forward to returning to the Isle of Man next year!
Cheers
Peter G

Allows Edits? YesGreat to have you around @peterg – sounds like you have quite a history with photography. Would be great to see a few of your shots from the IOM!
When I bought LR I found that I really stopped using PS (almost altogether). I’d suggest watching a few youtube videos on importing and organising shots, then start to get into the developing side.

Welcome @peterg – hope to see some nice shots from you!
Learn as much as you can about LR, then get to know the following in PS:
– Filter / Unsharp Masking;
– Fill / Content Aware;
– Curves using luminosity masks.You can right-click / Edit in / … CS from inside LR. It will open the pic in PS. When you Save after editing in PS, it opens a seperate edited version inside LR from where you can export it to your liking. Do as much as you can in LR before editing it in PS because editing is much more flexible & powerful on the RAW (i.e. LR) version.
You will hardly ever need more than that IMO.
