Allows Edits? YesYeah – I mean I thought the Shark Tank would be popular, but I didn’t think it would be THAT popular. Nice problems to have though!

could you only show a link to the shark tank as the first choice in latest posts, but not the actual shark tank osts?

Allows Edits? YesYou mean a list of “latest posts” that excludes posts from the Shark tank?
Not easily.

As someone that has been on photog forums since 2006 I think that the Shark Tank is a GREAT idea. From a moderator perspective it might be a tad much to deal with :o) but if someone wants to learn, knowing the bad with the good is the way to do it. I’m on Light Stalking because of “the tank”.
I skip in and out of Birds as Art from time to time. The entire forum is a “shark tank” and that is WHY I go there. I want other peoples perspectives. I want my skill sets to grow. I may not agree with everything that I read but I mull it over and I think about it. Every now and then Art Morris himself will step in and comment and that’s when you know you’ve got something, assuming that it’s not terrible lol. Love him or hate him, Artie is a master of bird photography and marketing.
The few other forums that I breeze through and some social media site that I am on have such restrictive policies about critiquing that it’s hard to get good constructive feedback there. Mostly it’s just “nice” “pretty”… They may be… but I’m looking for what I missed.

I signed on to Light Stalking awhile ago, but hadn’t really gotten into it. Then your Shark Tank started (only a couple of days ago really) and I am hooked. Even in the photography class I have been in for the last three years, all we get is positive comments from the instructor, or dead silence ๐ (I think she was traumatized by her own professors ๐ ) So, as a newbie to Light Stalking, and as a amateur photographer, I thank you from the bottom of my slowly toughening heart ๐

I think I can say this for everyone- It’s never personal. Ever. A critique is one person’s opinion for how to improve the image.
As photographers we “own” what we shoot. It’s almost like a child to us in that the image is in our heart. Even a child has to leave the nest eventually :o) I can go back to stuff that I shot in 2006 and find very few images that I really like. I used to like all of them lol
I am fortunate to have a photo club not far from me that has a blend of fine art and commercial photographers in it as well as people that bring point and shoot images (good ones at that). People that say things like “when I was in Ansel Adams workshop”. People that have had their work collected by museums. And moms that took a shot of their child. Every month, once a month, we have a critique session. It’s fun, it’s friendly, and most of all, it’s helpful. We also take field trips but participation for those is usually low. The club has no rules, dues, or officers. It’s just photographers sharing their work. Everyone participates and everyone wins. “The Tank” can be that place on the web…

I am new to lightstalking.us and it is the shark tank that attracted me here. I like the idea of a photo critique forum, even with all its inherent shortcomings, because ultimately is helps us learn what works and what doesn’t. I cannot say I’m sold on the no positives aspect yet. I think there is learning value in positive critique also but I can see the danger is that it becomes nothing more than an attaboy forum. But this seems like a nice hang overall and I’ve already seem some amazing images.

I caught Light Stalking from an advertisement on flipbook and right away checked it out, so here I am and I like it so far. I made mention of your group to my photographer Facebook friends and welcomed them aboard explaining the rules using only constructive critique. Hope to see some of them here. I’m not a paid for photographer but am good for what I’ve learned over many years as professional musician, the art of photography is a bedazzling realm of silvery surprise, the wonders of the sphinx puzzle unfold, like a child gazing toy marble tiger eyes on a sunny Saturday morn I love photography and can only humbly boast the thousands of photos I took before I realized the hundreds of errors that followed. Anyway look forward to being a participant aboard and sharing some of my own work for critique. Look forward to making new friends too. Best

Allows Edits? YesI think it depends how you read the site. Some people go to the “latest posts” page which gets updated at a hectic pace. Other people go forum by forum which is a lot less hectic.
I think you’ll always have the General Forum where the old regulars gather. But you’re right – we probably have to come up with a way to stem the fire-hose up updates or present it better or something. @camerasinger came up with the idea of removing Shark Tank updates from the stream – I’ll try to figure out how other sites handle it and see if something can be done.

Removing it from the stream does sound like a good idea if it’s disturbing the rest of the forum. Forums turn into home after a while. Most of the time we are all glad when our favorite relative finally leaves ๐
Obviously I’m not a regular but I can tell you with 100% certainty that a place on the web to get meaningful feedback for an image is nearly impossible to find. After about 2 months of entering I made it on to The Grid. To my relief they liked my work. They didn’t offer to hire me ๐ but I didn’t go down in flames either. I took away some good advice and I felt good about my progress. To my horror, the folder that I sent them the link to hadn’t been updated and it wasn’t the best that I could’ve shown. It had been sitting there for months and I had forgotten what I had put in the folder.
The hard part about receiving a critique is that it’s one person’s opinion. Multiple people with multiple viewpoints. The anonymity of the web levels the playing field so that anyone, no matter if they’ve shot all of their lives or just bought their camera, can toss in their opinion. Thats good and bad. Good because being new to photography doesn’t mean that you don’t have a good eye. No sense in going into the bad… it’s just one man’s opinion.

@admin and everyone else… give some feedback on this idea…
Suppose we do away with the “Latest Post” button… and just have a list of forums show up on the forum pager… this could make things a little saner and more balanced,,, besides no matter what forum you are in the “Latest Post” takes you to the first page containing posts from all forums, not the latest post from the forum that you are in. -
July 20, 2013 at 3:52 pm #97495
I think since the Shark Tank seems to have high jacked the forum temporarily, it would be good to have its own link in the forums menu bar drop down. Im sure this will become a prominent area of the site over all, enough to warrant its own direct link so as not to swamp the rest of the site… 1100 posts in 220 topics, in less than a week! Eeesh! Imagine whats going to happen when the word gets out in the world wide interwebs as a whole… it’s going to be a blood bath in here! Not that thats a bad thing traffic wise for the forums mind you.. the more the merrier!

@admin Learned something tonight… wanted to post “My Favorite Mushroom” to the General Forum… so I went there and posted it… or so I thought. I was surprised to find it in the Shark Tank. The I noticed that The Shark Tank is the default (first) choice on the forum selection box at the bottom of the posting page. If you want things to be more manageable in the Shark Tank why don’t you move to second position beneath the General Forum?

@admin also it’d be good if you could move the forum selection box up front so that people don’t miss it.

Well, The Shark Tank is what brought me over to here! I saw the Lightstalking FB page promote it and thought YES!! Finally a forum area that actually gives critique instead of the usual ‘nice pic’! I am learning and I need to know what others see is wrong with my image. Ive only subitted one image but the feedback on that image was huge and I learned a lot from those critiques. So thankyou! =D
I can totally understand how huge it could get. Can you sub-divide it into sections, like Landscape, Portrait etc???
Kudos to you for thinking this up!! *thumbs up*
