Allows Edits? YesSome are enormous Horatio. I once walked past one in dense bush which I didn’t see until the last minute. He was sitting on his haunches and was taller than me – I’m 5′ 8″. He didn’t bat an eyelid, just watched me pass on a wide berth. I was totally freaked out waiting for an attack because they can cause some serious damage if they want to. Probably the biggest one I’ve ever seen. The larger one in the pic above is about half that size.

-
April 27, 2018 at 4:27 pm #339738
Thank you Robert. Fortunately for me, this was an osprey nest, that the great horned owls decided was going to be their new temporary home. It was in my front yard. I was the only person that could get anywhere near the nest. When the mother was sitting there, I would go down in the morning with a cup of coffee and just talk to her. After the babies were born, either her or the father would make these daring attacks on any people getting any where near the tree housing the nest. They tolerated me. I have some more pictures as the babies started to leave the nest, and attempt to walk up and down the branch. These babies grew so fast that I could not believe my eyes. One of the parents, has about a six foot wingspan and is about four feet tall. And you almost can never hear them in flight. I hope you get a couple good images of the great horned owl. They are pretty incredible to watch.

Frogdaily, thank you so much. These little babies are so cute and look so soft to touch. I really enjoyed watching them develop from these little creatures that could barely see above the nest, to these huge owls that had long talons. The evening they took their first flight, it was incredible. Of course, I did not have my camera in hand. But, it was spectacular.

For some unknown reason, every time I hear the word ‘Mamma’ – which is about ten times a day – I’m immediately launching into Bohemian Rhapsody… all the way through… from start to finish… every time. That is 6 minutes of my life I’m not getting back. Every time. And here, just for you, to share the pain….

NOOOOOOOOOO!!! Chris, you have now totally shook my day, and quite possibly my week. I listened to your link a while ago, and now I can not get that song out of my mind. My mind keeps replaying and replaying your song. Then, I hop into the car, and what song comes on the radio? This exact song. Aaaaarrrgggghhhhh!!! I am doomed. LOL!!! Of course, this was a good replacement to the song that was stuck there previously… a song from Winnie the Pooh. So, things are looking up.

We turned our swimming pool into a wildlife spa. The jacuzzi is now a frog nursery. This is a leopard frog mother, with her baby on her back. We counted eight or nine pairs of mothers and babies.
And Chris… do not even think about how you might dine on frog legs. Hah, hah, hah.

Thank you so very much, Tersha. They have such terrific eyesight, it was really difficult to catch them when they surfaced for air.

What perfect timing you have, Elin. Poor baby. I wonder what actions brought about the mother’s need for discipline. It really must be viewed large. You have captured motion in the mane of the mother and foal, plus it accentuates the foal moving his/her head away from the mother. Additionally, I love how you can see her teeth and the large number of dapples on the mother. I love this image.

Allows Edits? YesThank you Horatio. The photo is taken at a horse farm that I drive through when I visit a bird sanctuary in Southern Iceland. Earlier this summer I stopped to watch a small flock of mares with foals and this one caught my attention because of her exceptionally strong and good movements. Since then I have stopped to watch her every time I drive through. She is very lively, guess she was trying her limits with her mother at this moment.

Elin, this is wonderful. Thank you so very much for expanding on the story. It is so very interesting to see just how different the personalities of the animals are. What I really loved about your image, was the way the little foal was trying to move out of her mother’s reach. This image really makes me smile.
I am looking forward to the follow-up photographs.

Allows Edits? YesAhh yes, speed bumps. We have White Tail Deer, Mule Deer, Pronghorn Antelope, Wild Turkeys, and some times mountain lions that live in the Town of Buffalo, to the extent they are considered pests. I hit the brakes for deer running out in the road at least once a day, maybe I should photograph them instead of cursing them.
Good Photo though Kent.

We see deer occasionally. This was the first time I saw a mother and her baby (actually there were two but the other one ran off) in the wild.
