More than 99 bottle of beer on the wall

This is a display behind the bar in a cantina here in Mazatlán. I tried cropping this with just the beer and no ceiling but there was not sense of scale. Does this work to show the scale? The foreground sucks.  An old drinking song, “99 bottles of beer on the wall, take one down and pass it around, 98 bottles of beer on the wall and on and on and on.

Hi Lenny, yes it works to show scale. Maybe slightly desaturate the red in foreground? It looks a bit too dominating 🙂

It’s a great composition, and subject. The colours are striking and I think the reflections in the ceiling add to the framing. Very nice image. I’m curious what it would look like in mono too?

• Hi Lenny,  I like it but I do not need the ceiling for a sense of scale. Actually on the contrary. (although I do like the ceiling, but do not really need it.

I agree Erik.  My first photo was almost exactly like your edit but my wife mentioned that it could be photo of a advertisement or poster.  I like it better without the ceiling but I know what it is and how big it is.  BTW, the red XX is glowing neon and the bottles are back lighted.

“I know what it is and how big it is.”. Most people know how big a bottle of beer is (sure, in Germany they are twice the size 🙂  ) and in your image we see more than 550 bottles. That tells me some scale.

I think Erik’s edit is quite effective, but this is a really effective photo in that it almost looks like a graphic design. One of those shots you need to look at for a second to figure out what you’re looking at. Very cool.

Eric, I’m using a crop similar to yours on a calendar for friends and family… they all know how big a bottle of beer is too so they don’t need something for scale.   2022 will all be booze shots.  Thanks for your comments!
