I took this at the Wanganui Botanical Park, here in New Zealand.  Settings were f5;  62mms; 1/100sec;  ISO100.  Flowers are on the periphery of things I shoot, but I still like them!

Nice texture, color and good focus on the crucial parts. Close distances and focal length magnify dof problems so it’s hard to get it all sharp front to back, if that’s what you want.

Lots of shadows on the bloom. Much of the time folks use a touch of fill flash to even out the lighting. The background at the bottom of the frame distracts. Other than using PS masking techniques- which I am crap at so they must be wrong- I’m not sure how to solve that problem while getting the angle you wanted.

These images look so simple, but they can be a real challenge.

Many thanks, Steve, very good tip about using fill flash, will do that next time.  Also, will try taking more shots so that I can do some focus stacking.   Although it is not really worth taking the image further, I already had selected the flower, so reversed the selection and a few minutes cloning, et voila!
