Cropping is personal but sometimes I just can’t make up my mind. The light streaming from behind some grasses in our yard caught my eye. When I grabbed a camera the spider just happened to be were the light fell. Now I’m deliberating over which crop is better or if there’s a better crop all together. What do you think sharks? A or B

Allows Edits? YesI can see your dilemma Rob , purely going on the saying *Get Closer , i would be edging towards photo B and it also has the most important parts in the frame, In Image A some grasses at the bottom ( i think grasses ) that draw the eye a little too much for me , such a beautiful photo mate nice going catching that light ..Shot B gets my vote 🙂

Sorry. Note to self: You never listen when you are asked to think it is either this or that. I will generally find a way to rebel.
I’m not crazy about either one. The OOF stem just above the spider intrudes. I would like it a bit better if it were higher- away from the spider in the frame, no matter which one I’m looking at. The OOF stems make a frame but on the whole lead me to look at them rather than the subject. Or maybe I’m just in a contrary mood today.

Allows Edits? YesI’m thinking I like the first one better Rob, mainly because of the comments already made. I think the second one makes the pic all about the tiny spider which is a bit too distant to be the main attraction really. The issue of the stem’s focus is valid but in the first shot the OOF becomes more of an element of the whole image isolating the spider in the focal plane with both a blurred background and foreground. The spider is still the main attraction but it doesn’t insist on having all your attention as much. Plus, I like the way the stalks spray into the frame in the first shot rather than create banding across the frame as in the second shot.

Thanks for your comments Patrick, Dahlia, Steve, and Graham. At least I can see that others are as divided on it as I am.

Allows Edits? YesI prefer the first one – the composition is pleasing to the eye, I really like the curve of that branch.

b.
image a leaves me wanting a bit more to the left side. image b makes better use of framing on the spider and i like the closer view of the spider.
nice work on the colors.

I like #2 Rob. I don’t think there’s enough interest in #1 to keep my attention for too long. In #2 the spider & web grabs all of the attention with the flower colors as an added bonus.

Well, Rob, I think that it depends if you want the plant to be the hero, or the centre of interest, or the spider. The spider to me, beats the plant, so I vote for number 2. If you were going to post on other social media or in a competition then you have two choices, so you can choose to enter/exhibit either to suit the situation — so the best of both worlds! Have really enjoyed viewing both 🙂

A for me. The picture seems to be about the play of light on the web and the flower. The little spider is incidental. It is never going to be big enough to be the main focus of the image.
Nice picture

How about A and B? Sitting here in my favorite chair with a pup in my lap sharing morning tea I would like to look up and see the two photos printed, framed, and placed on the wall that is about 20 feet away. And, as I changed chairs to look at them from from a different place in the room, I may discover different patterns. And, if I approached closely I would be reminded there is a story of a spider embedded in this work of art.

Allows Edits? YesAfter seeing both at large, I’ll go with the first one 😀. The second one feels to tight, reducing the useful negative space surrounding the web from the first shot.

When it comes to cropping – and especially with images such as this one with no definitive horizontal or vertical line – I will often experiment with ‘transform’ in LR as I’m cropping.
As I try a crop, I’ll move it around slightly in the image for a placement that suits my eyes, as well as… experiment with rotating the image 90 degrees either way, as well as flipping it horizontal and/or vertical. Quite often I’m surprised by the new view(s) that are presented.
