Allows Edits? YesWaking one’s desire for wander has to be one of the least discussed aspects of landscape imagery. Amidst such genre, it felt appropriate to evoke the legacy of direct photography; a tradition which targeted nature’s grandiose geological structures with a purpose in mind. This intention aimed to develop a conscious gaze towards our planet itself.

Said that, this particular image triggered wishful-thinking that made me long being there; under those specific weather circumstances and just a bit closer to that magnificent rock formation. Thanks @annehornsby for sharing this one with us, it really made me want to travel once again.

Allows Edits? YesCongratulations @annehornsby on pick of the week. The image was unlike anything I had ever seen and seemed an odd aberration sticking up out of nowhere. I found it fascinating and wishing I could see it up close as well have a sense of scale related to its size. thanks for tickling my curiosity.

Allows Edits? Yes@patography Pat if you can enlarge the image a bit and look to the left of the karst, you’ll see a tour boat, probably a 60 footer. It wasn’t that far from the karst, so it is tall.
I would guess it is between 1,000 and 1,300 feet tall. Not as tall as a mountain, but tall relative to the flat sea. This is the Gulf of Tonkin, part of the South China Sea.

Allows Edits? YesThank you, Anne. I can barely see the tour boat! I think the Jolly Green Giant lost his tooth and it landed here! (I’m so tired I’m punchy!)

Allows Edits? YesOh, my, thank you Federico. @federicoalegria. This is Halong Bay, Vietnam.
Your comment was very thoughtful. The phrase ‘legacy of direct photography’ is new to me, but it does describe how I often photograph, especially when traveling. For me one very important purpose of the ‘conscious gaze toward the plant’ is to help me remember, especially in my final years, when I will be experiencing the word traveling through photo files, not hiking, boating, flying, driving.
One reason I value LS is that I’m inspired to try to think more artistically about my photography, including storytelling.

Allows Edits? YesThank you so much, folks. That means a lot. I had never seen anything like this until our trip to Vietnam. This is Halong Bay and this odd looking creation is one of many limestone karsts that dot the area. Some 500 million years ago limestone collected in thick layers (thousands of meters thick according to google), then the earth launched into tectonic uplifting in uneven patterns, followed by erosion of the higher lumps into these shapes. Quite amazing to me
