-
December 9, 2025 at 1:29 pm #543145
Patrick, did you manually illuminate the rain, flashlight or fill flash, or was there a light (street light?), just out of the composition?
-
December 9, 2025 at 1:37 pm #543146
Yeah sure , this was shot with a crop sensor camera , 105mm macro , you are on the money this was a street light outside my yard fence maybe 35 /40 feet away from me i was focused on the bulb and then i recomposed very slightly so it was near the strongest part of the source light but keeping the bright bulb ever so slightly out of frame , Very simple stuff just play with shutter speeds for the look you want 🙂

When I would go into Town I never Stayed too long, and When I had to go into Denver, that totally sucked. I’m a bit more social now, but still prefer the mountain forests and semi-solitude, ME, the Wife, and the Dogs.

I fully appreciate that type of living i really do , i done enough of it when i was in my late teens and early twenties , i did enjoy that even now all those types of places are on my doorstep and i can be up there for a good few hours and that seems to recharge my system for another good while.

Thank you kindly Steve , with the sea you have a lot of options for different types of scene , sandy beach , rocks , driftwood , i just wish i had more time there everything i have round here is rivers or loughs , still water is nice when there is some fog /mist sitting just above the surface , rivers just become like molten lava except it’s not the same colour , I too like going on my own one can zone out when your alone.

Allows Edits? YesHi Anne, it’s a fence post that used to be a tree with severe watering, so you’re right, it is tree rings that you’re looking at.

I done some when i got started Robert but i think we all do and some stick with it and become really good , i do enjoy it but i can only do so much before my mind starts wondering about all the other bits of life and living that i am missing out on so i then turn to that type of photography more often , i also walk the dog a lot at all different times and due to living in the type of place i do with , rivers , forrest , hills , mountains i see the landscape daily in all its shades and tones from the break of dawn into the wee hours of the mornings and it becomes something i need a break from so i go to the city and shoot the scenes i find here ( i hate to say it ) I use nature and the landscape to go for a walk and not to think about photography in that way but i always have my phone if something is catching my eye at that point.

Allows Edits? Yes@tersha I wasn’t familiar with them other then a mention in “The Christmas Song”. So as so often happens on this sight it caused me to do some research and I discovered this.
A few hundred years ago North America’s forests were dominated by the American chestnut. It stood as the dominant hardwood tree in most of the continents forests. Americas chestnut trees were killed off by by a plague brought by humans from Asia. Known as Chestnut Blight, this fungus arrived in the US in the early 1900’s and quickly killed Americas vast forests of chestnut trees in less than 40 years. This has been called one of the worst ecological disasters in history as the demise of the American chestnut struck a huge blow to the ecology of North America. This heavily relied upon food source was gone almost overnight. As forests have recovered, other tree species such as oaks have come to fill the role chestnuts once served in the environment, but these species are simply stand ins for America’s original hard mast tree.

I took these this morning while taking Moocher for a walk. Had about 5 inches of snow last few days and last night, rain and warmer weather began to melt the snow. I usually see this in the early spring as snow melts off.
Mouse trails under the snow exposed, due to the melting snow. Always an interesting pattern.

Allows Edits? YesGreat texture on the starling, Patrick. We have a few in the garden every day, but nowhere near the amount that I used to see.
-
December 30, 2025 at 6:56 pm #544056
Thank you Diane , i see lots of starlings but very few smaller garden birds which are normally knocking about , only seen 1 blue tit and a robin all year in the yard , pigeons , crows , and the magpie are plentiful even the buzzards have been less frequent around the hills.
Winter showers blowing in next week maybe they come looking freebies 🙂

Allows Edits? YesStarlings are a scourge around here, often seen in flocks numbering in the hundreds, they nest in equipment, fireplace vents ,roofs, clogging airducts and covering every thing in a thick acidic coat of bird crap, as well as the damage they do to crops. I once shot into a flock with a 410 shot gun and dropped over 30 birds with a single shot. Though I agree that is a cool tegage. But it does make me think of grabbing a 12 gauge.

Allows Edits? YesI was looking at this and the windturbines, power lines, ect and got curious about forests in the UK and how many there might be and the size, Part of that spurred by a British friend that was going camping in Galloway Forest Park and was talking of getting off the grid and how big it was. I kind of found that humorous as there are three national forests near me, one which I have leases in to run cattle, each larger then the whole land mass of the UK, turns out the US has 168 forests each larger then the entire land mass of the UK, I remember someone on light stalking once asked me how much editing I had to do to remove traces of man from my photos and they didn’t believe me when I said none. Any how one of the benefits of this multinational sight is learning a bit about other countries, I like that.

The place across the way was until last year one of the cities household waste dumps , after years of protest to have it shut it finally closed and they are in the process of cleaning the site to turn it into a nature reserve with some outdoor activity structures for school age children , places to work and learn about the nature in the surrounding hills , the spot i was standing is a nature reserve with lots of rare wildflowers mushrooms and fungus
