This week, the POTW award goes to bucweeet @paul-3, a.k.a. Paul.

From the first moment that I viewed this photograph, I was compelled by it. I kept returning to it over the week.

I asked Paul if these were his daughters as they project such a sense of peace and calmness in their expressions. He told me they were not, which surprised me.

You can tell that there is an intimacy between the three of them, and they reflect comfort with Paul, as the photographer, standing over them.

The circular composition is intriguing and not often seen here on Lightstalking, especially in portraits and candid photos of people.

The positioning of the hair is also crucial to the shot. It creates a flow, almost like water. I kept asking myself, “What if the hair had been positioned tight to the women’s heads? Would the shot be as compelling?”

I don’t believe it would. It helps to direct the eyes into the circular pattern and also to infuse the feminine aspect of these three women as they lie together in a vulnerable position upon the grass.

Finally, the colorful shirts work perfectly as a frame, helping to drive a viewer’s eyes inward.

In my initial comment on the picture, I stated that perhaps it could have been improved by having one of the women looking up. However, the more I looked at it…, the more I realized that Paul’s version was perfect.

If one of the women had been looking up, it would have made the picture entirely about her, thus changing the feeling of sisterhood created by the circle.

Nope. In retrospect, I believe @bucweeet captured the photo perfectly, which is why he deserves the POTW.

Such a great pic, Paul – a thoroughly deserved choice for POTW.  Everything comes together!

[Am wondering if Kent is going for a Guinness Book of Records attempt with his fourteen edits to his initial post.  I would be willing to recommend him  😉  ]

Wow! Thanx @Kent for the honours; and all the wonderful comments!

For a bit of background, it’s an image of three of the singers in one my son’s opera company’s performances.  We were doing head shots in preparation for the upcoming summer season and decided to try something different.

The dresses the women were wearing were special order from India for their performance of Poppeo.
