        I suppose this is more close-up or portraiture but I started calling it sharpshooting, basically a 200-500 f5.6 with a 1.4 teleconverter and a home made shoulder harness to take the weight. I just added the converter this weekend the birds were hiding but flowers and insects were plenty. It loses 2 stops of light but I like the results on a sunny day. Not much editing some cropping ran them through Nx studio, really a test weekend.

          Those turned out pretty good Michael, I’ve done something similar at 800mm , and yeah lots of light is critical for a fast shutter speed, I opted for a Manbily Monopod to deal with the weight.

            You don’t mention the camera you use… Full Frame or Crop?

            If you’re using a 1.6 crop sensor camera (canon) then you are closer to 1,120mm when you add the teleconverter.

                It’s a Nikon d780 full frame, and these are basically straight out of the camera.

                Wonderful shots, Michael. I’ve never really considered doing insect photography at those zoomed focal lengths.
