Allows Edits? YesWe have this bar around the corner, that is absolutely full of old school computer games from the 80s and 90s. It’s great because I can give the kids 10 bucks each and enjoy a quiet beer while they play games – and sometimes we’ll just give up the phone too. And some of the games are the ones I actually want to join them in as well. But I’ve noticed that when they’re playing games, it casts a perfect cold light on their face, and if you can get the right background, there is some interesting images to be had. It’s also one of the few times that I can get a neutral look from them rather than a goofy look or a laugh.
Anyway, let me know what you would’ve done different. This one was taken on an iPhone in portrait mode.

Great capture, the atmosphere is fantastic. The way the phone’s screen illuminates his face is perfect, and you’ve nailed the composition.
In answer to your question Rob and totally respecting that you were there for a quiet beer, not a photoshoot, the only thing I’d have done differently is purely technical.
It’s a perfect example of that classic trade-off we all face: the phone was absolutely the right tool to grab a fleeting, personal moment, but my inner pixel-peeper can’t help but imagine how clean the file would be from a dedicated camera. It really just highlights the eternal struggle with phone sensors in low light.
Ultimately, you 100% made the right call. You captured the moment, which is the most important part by a long shot. It’s a fantastic shot because of that.

Allows Edits? YesYeah, I thought exactly the same thing once I saw this on the big screen. Next time I’ll probably take my backpack with me and my little GX 8 would be a better option for a shot like this. Even at high ISO I think it would be a lot sharper.

I notice a lot of people are using gigapixel AI and the results are fantastic , i don’t own it myself but i might buy it for some images that don’t have enough res for printing but this fixes that issue with decent results.

As you wish, Rob ( @admin-2 ).
I would suggest cropping out that light at the top of the image I find it a huge eye snag. This will definitely highlight you son’s face and make it the focal point of the image.
As for the softness? and grain?… for me, they are just part of this image and fit with the image’s lighting.
One of the biggest drawback now-a-days is the craving for super-sharp images. Remember back in the day when ISO 1600 was king for sports shooting. The grain in this image doesn’t even come close to the images of that time.
Anyway… there are lots of software options now that will not only remove the grain, but sharpen the image and then enlarge the image to virtually 20’x30′ walls with little, to no loss of detail.
With the exception of that light… I really like the image. Is it printable as is… probably not. But software can fix that problem.
Aaannnddd… if you’re really curious about the possibilities with the image, toss it up for a challenge… “What would you do with this image?” (or something like that) and see what the Sharks can come up with.

The hair is the biggest problem with making it a printable image (and that’s where DSLR would/may help [although in real low light it probably doesn’t help that much])

Allows Edits? YesI quite like that second one @bucweet – thanks for taking the time to do this. I actually really like the idea of the third one as well, but I tend to shy away from significantly changing photographs like that – I’m not sure why it’s just always paid my personal preference. I’m a bit torn on that to be honest.

It does look a little noisy. Even a run through LR’s noise reduction might clean up his face appropriately to a youngster. Reducing contrast might also soften him up a bit.
My iPad renders this a shade off pink skin to a touch of magenta I’d want to change.
Composition is brilliant. Concentration is exactly what I would want. It actually conveys hope rather than mindless distraction.

Yeah, I took an edit of this on an iPhone so now I am aware of some of the issues it has once I get it onto that big screen. You’re totally right about the noise which I will have another go at.

I like the POV angle and he definitely looks engaged with his phone. Great capture of a moment in time.

I think I would make a minor adjustment… the yellow light in the upper left corner draws the eye away from your subject, I would either remove it or position yourself where it would not be in the image.
also, I have been told that you should not have an item where it looks as if it is coming out of the person’s head. Maybe just a slight step to the side would take that angle away as well.
The person in the middle with black shirt also draws my eye – I can’t seemed to unsee it.

The amount of street shots i had to throw away because of this very issue , it is now one of the first things i look out for when framing up and lots of lamp post in the scene, good point Belinda 🙂

Allows Edits? YesYeah, I definitely was worried about that yellow light and I actually almost did some dramatic editing to get rid of it. I might work on it a bit extra thanks to your comments. And now that you mention the thing coming out of his head, I cannot unsee it. It’s part of the architecture, but I think I could probably pull the colour down there to make it less intrusive. Nice natural capture Rob. It’s so much easier taking an incognito snap with a phone.
Shark bite. Agree with most of what’s been noted. Only would add a crop, some warming of the skin(not too much as the available light is purple), slight noise reduction, slight sharpen, and remove the object in front of him that looks like a hose or a chair back? Here’s my take on it…
