I lost my Father in Law yesterday, 95 years young. Although sad it was a blessing for him to no longer be in pain and misery. He was a real character, came over from the Netherlands with his family to escape the Nazis (he was Jewish) and settled in the east end of London. His Grandmother ran a B&B and had the Kray Twins as lodgers for a while! In 1940 he joined the Dutch Navy (falsifying his papers to get in as he was only 15) and did his duty including being torpedoed by the Germans and surviving. He joined the Merchant Navy after the war and one day docked in Barry South Wales – the rest is history for my family. He was as tough as old boots with stories you could only imagine were fantasy but had a light and twinkle in his eyes and a softness he would only show to his beloved grandchildren. This image portrays the hard core strength of a power station he showed on the outside alongside the shining light we all knew and loved – taken days before his death.
