I’d love to see your wildflowers, they’re all favorites in springtime! (Even if Mark Twain would call them “educated weeds” lol)

Terrific set of wildflower shots. I especially like the Poppy and Cornflower mix. Such beautiful colors and bokeh. Still a little early for them in my area but will keep an eye out.
One of my favorite Twain quotes that he may or may not have actually said is “the secret of getting ahead is getting started.”

Thanks, Dave! These are all shots from last year, the wildflowers are just starting to kick in here.
Also thanks for the Mark Twain quote, he’s always great & I hadn’t heard that one. It’s a keeper!

Allows Edits? YesThanks Marty, the lens that I used is a Petzval58, which is a Lomography lens. The DOF is the smallest possible, defined by the lens, and it has interchangeable aperture plates for different bokeh/effects. It’s my go to lens at the moment, as I really like the results. The other lens that I use a lot for effects is a Meyer Optik Gorlitz Oreston 50mm f1.8… this one I got from Ebay for very little money.
-
April 30, 2022 at 4:05 pm #497788
Thanks so much for this info @tersha! I also appreciate the pointer to lomography. I just tried the “lomo” degradation effect on a purple larkspur shot with Krita software, see what you think. I love the soft diffuse effect.
-
May 19, 2022 at 6:10 am #498923
I have a lens that does swirly bokeh similar to the Meyer Optik (Helios 44-2 58mm), I also have a filter that does this for any lens. I am going to use them more for flowers. I really like the Petzval 58 Bokeh Control with the ability to control the level of effects. Unfortunately I have spent too much money on lenses and will not be able to buy this one.

A few more wildflowers from my home state, California:
Canterbury Bells
Chia:
Eastern Buckwheat
Blue Dick:
And last but not least, California’s state flower.
Golden Poppies. Several years ago, I hit the jackpot on my visit. Rain had been so plentiful that the poppies carpeted the mountainsides. Locals dubbed the rare event: Poppy Apocalypse. One of my all-time favorite hikes!

Allows Edits? YesThe lens was a lensbaby double glass point of focus lens which is their version of Diane’s Petzval58, which is a Lomography lens as well, The artsy version was just 2 layers of the same photo blending the top layer in Subtraction mode, I think, not for sure on that but one of the blending modes.

Hi Tobie, your wildflower shots are fantastic! Thanks for sharing. Do you know what type of wildflowers these are, I think your signature line indicates South Africa?
-
June 1, 2022 at 12:00 pm #499630
Thanks Marty! These are all various types of daisies. Not getting one’s attention when they’re on their own but when they all flower together, they make stunning flower carpets! All from South Africa’s Namaqualand!
A friend demonstrating the fact below.

Fabulous shot, @tobiepsg! Thanks so much for sharing. I would think I had died & went to heaven with all the natural wonders you have in South Africa! The daisies are simply spectacular, I love it when the wildflowers cover the landscape. Your friend’s joy expresses it perfectly.
-
June 4, 2022 at 6:48 am #499721
Thanks @martye. Yea our Namaqualand is a popular tourist destination at around August – September each year. The scenes are actually unpredictable – only really at their most beautiful after some good rains in our winter season. So some years you find almost nothing, other years you find scenes like those above.

-
May 12, 2022 at 5:23 pm #498603
Thank you, Dahlia! I haven’t had a chance to try to ID them yet. But they were in full bloom everywhere in the state park we stopped at taking the back road home. So glad we did, a lucky photo op! Some cactus flowers just like these also had deep pink centers.
-
May 12, 2022 at 7:50 pm #498610
I googled these cactus flowers. You’re right, Dahlia, they are optunia macrocentra. Also known in Texas as prickly pear. Fun Fact: Both pads & pears are edible & considered delicacies in Texas!
According to master gardeners, “…prickly pear cactus is a perfect addition to the landscape. The fleshy pads (“nopales”) of this plant (including the fruits that follow flowering called “tunas”) can be eaten raw or cooked, adding green bean-like flavor to soups, stews, salads and other meat and egg dishes. It can even be used in marmalade or candied.”
Also, “studies have shown that nopales can control blood sugar in some people.”
-
May 13, 2022 at 12:24 pm #498631
Correction! Dahlia’s spelling is correct, they are opuntia.

A funny story to tell. Years ago, I asked my CFO boss to give me time off to go on a road trip to see the wildflowers blooming in Hill Country. He said, “Yes. But boy, am I glad I’m not married to you!!!” So I asked him what he did in his free time, and he seriously replied,”I follow the stockmarket.” (To which I silently thought, “And boy, am I glad I’m not married to you!” True story lol

Beautiful shot & fascinating story, Dave! I’ve heard of rent-a-goat businesses but didn’t know the goats ate wildflowers. Although come to think of it, isn’t it a running joke that they’ll eat anything? I’m curious, what color is this bloom? We have some wild blackberries here that are white.
