Over the years, some photos resulted in a surprise not seen/noticed while taking a photo. The two photos I start with and detail will help with what I hope can be an interesting throwdown that we can all post to.
During 95% of my street photography, my camera is zone focused. I took this photo of a man as I walked by. Also, most of my street shots are hip shots, meaning I am not looking through the viewfinder or at the screen on the back of the camera. Since I use a wide angle, I angle the camera 90 degrees left or right, usually at waist level and take the shot as I’m still moving on without stopping.
The man was slightly too close for my “zone” but once I got home, I was surprised to see the young girl framed between people. Didn’t plan it, nor expect it and was nicely surprised to see the photo take on more interest when I saw it full sized on the monitor for my computer:

This next shot was from an antique store. Found a wall of mirrors and focused on myself taking the photo. Not until I got it onto the computer and viewed the shot, did I notice my legs in a lower mirror. That was a surprise and an unexpected plus (imo) for the shot once I saw that detail.

I took this shot in the rain the other day trying to catch the Red Shouldered Hawk. I did not see the House Finch sitting on a branch nearby. Predator and prey do not usually hang out together.

That’s a cool photo. Wonder if the hawk is waiting for the finch to fly off, so its more sport during the hunt?

I suspect that finch was being a statue otherwise he would have been dinner.

Allows Edits? YesThat photo of the man with the girl in between the people is actually very cool. It’s almost like a juxtaposition of anger and innocence. I see what you mean about not seeing it at the moment, but it turned out very, very well. Honestly, not sure if I have any shots that would fit this throwdown. I would have to go back through my collection a little bit. That’s quite serendipitous.

Thank you.
I have a few more photos that come to mind and will post them. I have about 150K to look through, to see if there are those I forgot about and will be surprised again LOL!
Yeah, I was looking through photos and came upon that street photo and figured it would be a good throwdown.

Allows Edits? YesI will be impressed at anyone who has shots like this. I think @stef’s was a great example, but again quite serendipitous.

The intention for this MTaDW photo was about the woman holding the umbrella. However, my camera (Canon 6D) is not zone-focused and was left on autofocus. So it focused on the water drops all over the side window.
While you can still make out the woman holding the umbrella, it turned out to be an abstract photo instead.
Pleasant surprise!!

I looked at this photo a few times, deciding if I would add it to the MTaDW Project. Then, after a few days, viewed it and saw the bird. So yeah, it’s in the Project 🙂

Allows Edits? YesI think the rearview mirror and hence the three different images actually makes a really compelling kind of overall image for this one specifically.
But geez, some of the photos you are producing remind me so much of rural Australia, it’s scary. It’s giving me a lot of fodder for my plan later in life to land in Los Angeles and buy a crappy old car to drive across America. It’s been one of my travel dreams for quite a while.

The mirror on my truck can make more of an interest in some shots.
Driving all the way across America, a route that will take me along the northern areas, then loop back through the southern areas, has been a bucket list for me too. Of course, I’ll be towing a small trailer and my wife and I will take a couple months for that exploration.
Farthest west I’ve driven is Kansas. I’ve flown out to California both military and civilian aircraft. One such military flight, half our Infantry company was headed out to NTC. Secluded at the rear of the plane was a group of older (retired) SF, Rangers and other Spec Ops. About 4 hours into the flight, they began to get rigged up for a jump. From the cockpit area, the Jump Master came out and checked all their gear and we can feel the plane descend a little. Then, one by one they jumped out of the plane. These men were all in their 60s and 70s.
Also during that flight, we could tell we were descending and the pilot announced off to the right side of the plane was the Grand Canyon, so we all crowded the port windows and got to see the canyon from about 1500 ft (450 or so meters) above it.
Anyway, here is another photo where I never noticed the man on top of the building even after several looks at the photo. Then, one day… there he is. My composure was the woman crossing on the crosswalk and waiting for her to center on the arched Riverwalk gate.

As I drove downtown, saw the dog walking along the sidewalk as I approached The Lyric. I also saw the group of people and aimed the camera, while I kept driving. As I passed, took the shot (always a hip shot, never looking). When I got home and viewed the photo, I laughed. Yeah, the world is a toilet for a dog.

When you realized that the Eagles had two surviving juveniles.

I’ve yet to see any perched eagles where I live. I’ve seen them while they fly by or when I’m driving, but never while walking around, looking.

Allows Edits? YesI’m lucky enough to have a mated pair nesting by the lake I hang out at. If they are used to seeing the kayak out you can get right under their favorite tree. Most of the time they have one chick survive this was the year that a cougar was hunting the area, lots of leftovers for the eagles not so many deer that year.

Many years ago, in a galaxy far, far… just kidding.
Way back I had a Canon PowerShot S2 IS, I looked up how to take shots of fireworks because I never did when I used film. So, I plugged in the manual settings and hoped it would work.
The surprise is, this is the first shot I took.

I only noticed the small blue visitor in this Kodachrome when I got it back from the lab. If you look closely, you see the body of a dragonfly hovering at the extreme tip of this red berried plant.

Great photo!! That yellow background, then the green and red and finally the dragonfly caught in the DoF. Hooah!
Which reminds me… gotta go find a photo now, LOL.

Allows Edits? YesI took this photo in 2022 during our trek to Everest Base Camp in Nepal. When I looked at it originally, it showed little of interest other than it is the summit of Mt Everest. When I got home, I zoomed in and to my surprise, could see climbers. I did some research and found that these climbers are nearing the south summit. One point of interest is the cluster of climbers that it turns out are surrounding the US Weather station that had been positioned there a few days earlier. I managed to find a person that tracks all summits and he gave me some names of people that had summitted that morning. It turns out one of them is an Australian whom I contacted and shared my photo with. He sent me a photo of him nearing the summit (not really appropriate for me to on-share) but a cool gesture. The image was taken from another (much lower) peak called Kala Pathar which is approximately 10km point to point from Everest tip – I’d been told not to take any weight up that morning but I couldn’t resist taking my photo pack with tripod (I paid for it – it was exhausting). The air is so thin and so clear up there, there is very little atmospheric distortion. Despite that, the photo still needed a little sharpening and some noise reduction (it was 5am after all).

What a fascinating photo. I’ve mentioned in a past post somewhere on this forum, that it is fascinating to see photos of places people will never get to be, in their lifetime. How the experiences of others, captured in a photo allows people to see parts of the world, situations, and moments they will never get to personally experience.
This photo is such a great example. Thank you.

Going way back to a tour in Iraq. As we pulled out of the camp, saw the boy holding up the “Peace” hand and arm signal. Stuck the camera in his direction and snapped the shot. When I was able to download the photo and look at it, of course, the kid behind him on the right stole the show LOL.

Here is a photo from October 2024 during the nights the Atlas Comet was seen. Some cars were caught in the shot because I was in my front yard aimed out over the road in front of the house. I caught a flashing something in the sky and didn’t know what it was. I knew it wasn’t an aircraft. Finally a friend mentioned it was a Star Link satellite.
FYI – Canon 6d, 28mm (28-300mm zoom), F/3.5, IS 1600, 10 second exposure.

I came upon this Episcopal father siting near a stained glass window. I asked him if he wouldn’t mind getting up for a moment so I could get a clear shot of the window. Once he did, look what happened on the right… Now, that is what I call a surprise!

Yesterday my wife and I walked around town. As we finally walked along the downtown area, a clothing store always has great displays. In one of them, a mirror hung and I saw a building from across the street reflected in the mirror. So I lined up, viewing only through the view finder and took this shot.
Once I got home and downloaded the photo, then I saw the reflection of the building “also” in the window pane as well.
