Sometimes you just can’t be in a place at the time you’d like to be there. I had imagined this castle in the late day light BUT we could only be there in the middle of the day. The image just felt like a snap shot. This is my attempt to add some atmosphere. Does the processing work? How would you change it to make it feel more like it was taken at dusk.

I really like this. The gray skies have wonderful contrast and texture and match the mood of the gray fortress. A sunset and its warm light might be a mismatch.

I might want to crop in the bit of the land on the far left. As just a bit of land it seems to intrude. I think you’ve got space to preserve the water just before the ground that the castle is on.

I might want to subdue the greens a bit. They seem brighter and a bit “happier” than the rest. I’m surprised you didn’t go all the way to b&w.

Thanks for the input. I’m not as enamoured with b&w as lots of others so warmish sunsets are part of my reality. The colour of the castle stone is typical for Scotland so I want to maintain that.

I did ponder the small bit of land protruding from the opposite side of the bay. It’s easy to remove but I’m still split on it 50/50. It’s presence adds to the depth against the distant hill IMHO.

I was thinking the same about the green and I think you’re correct. I’ll tame the happy green down a bit as it is a bit out of character. Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts. I appreciate your point of view.

I really like what you’ve done Rob, and I’m struggling to ST it. Not sure about the greens, I’ve noticed that sometimes in that sort of atmosphere the light can give that brightness in places.

Thanks Diane. I too have noticed that when there’s an overcast sky some colours can be brighter. Perhaps that’s due to less reflected glare. In this case I’m thinking that the saturation increased due to my darkening of the foreground. Maybe that should’ve been done on a luminosity layer. A rookie mistake? LOL

I think the post processing works extremely well. The only gripe I might have is that the reflection in the pond of the building looks a little dark.

Thanks Rob. I reviewed the original raw file and you’re 100% correct about the reflection. A good catch on your behalf. The added eyes and experience in the ST always instructive.

Hi Rob, this is a stunning shot and I really love the colours and the atmosphere in the photo. I agree with Diane’s comment about the greens. On overcast days the bright colours can really pop sometimes and it looks good in my opinion more like a juxtaposition of moody and cheerful in a frame. I cannot see anything that can be changed in the photo 🙂

Thank you Dahlia. The saturation of the green is definitely a point that has differing opinions. I’ll post a revised version to see everyone can agree.

I’ve reduced the saturation on the green and dodged the refection. The changes admittedly are subtle. Let me know if this is better or not.

Yeah, fixing up the exposure of that reflection means that my eyes don’t dart there immediately. I think that was a worthwhile thing alone. This is a very very solid image.

I like this version too Rob. The less saturated greens go well with the greyish tones of the stones in the structure and also work with the moody atmosphere 🙂
