Trying to understand the finer points of bokeh

I’m focusing on learning how to maximize bokeh for optimal effect. I’m thinking that maybe beauty is in the eye of the beholder. How much is too much or not enough. I’m posting two shots of marsh flowers on a recent vacation and accidentally noticed a small amount of bokeh in one shot so when back to figure out what had caused it so I could do more bokeh shots. I read Federico’s great LS article on bokeh and got his thoughts on one of my shots, but I’d love to open this topic up to the group. I’m not sure if my subjects are compelling enough to be enchanced by but not overpowered by the bokeh. As always, I appreciate your thoughts! 😀

Both shots were taken with f/8, 1/1000 sec, ISO 1600, -.7 step, and 233 (1)  and 235 (2) mm.

it’s quality, not quantity.  it doesn’t matter how many blurry balls there are if it works in the image and adds to the composition.

the bokeh works well in both of these photos.

Like @loki, I think it really depends on whether it is too distracting from the photo therefore (after you have developed the skill), it becomes a case of personal taste.

I know a lot of people chase old Soviet lenses specifically for the type of bokeh they can get. They take their bokeh seriously!

Hi Marty, beautiful shots you have captured here.

There isn’t anything like “not enough” bokeh in photography I think, in my opinion, unless you need to make a subject stand out or avoid distracting backgrounds/foregrounds. Sometimes the circular bokeh can be distracting if it is too much or if there are more bright bokeh that take away from the main subject. I think it is finding the balance and making it work in the image by complementing it and without it being too overpowering.

On the other hand, you can also capture abstract photographs with just the bokeh. It can look very atmospheric/dreamy depending on the light, scene and colours that you choose to work with 🙂
