I was looking for volunteer flowers in sidewalk cracks when I spotted this.  I have no idea how may hundreds of times I have walked by this on my way for coffee the last 12 years here in  Mazatlán and not noticed it.  The sidewalks are so crumbling and dangerous that walking requires my full attention one where my feet are going.  I need to stop and look around more often.   1/200, f2.8, 15mm, iso160  Does the drain pipe work as a center of attention?

I’m torn Lenny. The subject is super interesting…but not for long. I do think the drain pipe anchors the pic (and the tree) but after that not much else appeals. Has the B&W treatment reduced it’s impact? The square crop? Not sure. From the POV we see the tree clawing its way up the wall toward the light so maybe a portrait crop showing more sky would highlight it’s valiant struggle.

As much as I like the idea and the “how many times..”, there isn’t much there for me either. One thing I might try is to make the image of the vine/trunk against the texture of the wall. The mix of shapes, textures and possibly colors might make a more engaging image.

My wife and I regularly visit an arboretum and every time a try a picture of a vine growing on a stone wall. I just can’t resist it, though others may decide “meh”.

Hi Lenny , it’s a good example of juxtaposition! I think I agree with Graham …. a portrait format might be better. I really like the subject, but I’d like to see where , or how far the roots grow down, as they look a bit chopped off?

Hi Lenny, this is an interesting shot. May be you could include more of the tree’s roots at the bottom if possible 🙂
