      Elephant Silhouette.

Delving into the archives and a treasured memory. One of my first wildlife photos I took nearly ten years ago, 3 July 2010 with a canon bridge camera. In August 2010 hubby bought me my DSLR camera with kit lenses and this is how my photographic journey started.

        A really wonderful shot, Charmaine.

Like Joseph, I was in Africa before too, a couple of times. But I was a young, dumb sailor on a carrier and, like most young, dumb sailors, was more interested in acting like a sterotypical sailor than much else. Wish I could get that time back and the many wasted port visits.

Hi Tobie and thanks. They’re actually huge sand bags. I’m not sure but I think they might be to help prevent sand erosion along the coast. It’s been an ongoing problem here in Adelaide for many years. Lately they’ve been taking sand from the southern end of the coast and trucking it up to the northern beach areas only to have it wash back down south again. These sand bags are the remnants of an earlier era I think.

Aaaah, very interesting! It certainly seems to be working as the bag-area is much higher than the surrounding beach.

I once saw huge ships in Durban pumping sand (gathered from the sea bed) onto the beach via pipes probably 24″ or more in circumference and about 1km long. It was quite something to see as the sand came flying in a stream which traveled about 50′ through the air before it hit the beach.
