Great shot and very dramatic!  I have a question for anyone.  Why do the tips and instructions say to open up the aperture?  Isn’t this going to make the background noticeable, which we want to avoid?  Do you have to use a black backdrop?

A black background is good for low key work but not necessarily required for side lit subjects , please have a look at these sample shots to get an idea

You can achieve beautiful work from plain old window light and it does not always need to be a person as your subject it can anything you want 🙂
