  Use a prime lens when you need maximum low-light performance, a shallow depth of field with soft background blur, or sharper image quality.

    Beautiful portrait! I was seriously considering longer focal lengths, such as 105mm, for portraits, but I think that in most situations I need to be closer.

      This may sound very ignorant, but, @hkurtz2, I don’t really know – I know I was at a distance when I shot. I also tend to run images through my sharpening program.

  I really love prime lenses! I’ve used a 14mm for a while for landscapes/indoors and an 85mm for portraits. Now, I’m very happy with my Viltrox AF 85mm F1.4 Pro Full-Frame. This picture was taken with it this weekend at the medieval fair in Ávila (Spain).
