For your consideration @fisher-2.
A good opportunity to practice channel selection techniques.

Thanks @fisher-2!
I personally think the ‘blur all backgrounds into obscurity’ thing is way overdone.
I do that sometimes and people always respond well to that type of photo but more often I’m trying to make a multi-dimensional photo that balances the subject with the background.
Perhaps I haven’t succeeded in this case but, being a guy,…[Read more]

Thanks guys!
@micheal-lloyd, the previous versions just showed the diagonal lines of the speaker towers behind.
Here’s the SOOC file.
Sometimes at events I like to shoot from the hip, literally, with a wide perspective and make cropping decisions in post.

Thanks @candida-tate!
I was thinking that the woman is the ‘lead’ and the man is ‘supporting’.
The black area behind them is a stack of speakers but the lines of their structure didn’t really ‘read’ so I burned them way down – thanks to @tobiepsg for guiding my hand there.Check It Out

Thanks @caimi!
Nottinghill used to have a large ‘Afro-Caribbean’ presence, not so much these days but the neighborhood still hosts Europe’s largest street party with floats and costumes like Mardi-Gras or Brazil’s Carnival.
I tried to update the Flickr file with an updated version but I fear I’ve broken the link again.

Thanks @nikon-nut & @tobiepsg!
It was a good day despite a steady rain – can confirm the efficacy of the weather sealing for the 5DII & 24-105 f/4 IS.

I see the colors too but I’ve come to think that those funky greens and magentas in actually near neutral areas are an artifact of the compression scheme Flickr uses.Check It Out

Hi John @ Nikon-nut,
Great light, great atmosphere, great shot!
I would be doing some dodging and burning to try to push the drama further but that’s just me.
Have you ever tried duplicating the layer, in PS, and setting the mode on the new layer to ‘multiply’ and adding a mask to return some areas to ‘normal’?
Not for everyone but I…[Read more]

Hi Jenn @sweetness29157,
Here’s a quick shot of my son, an unwilling model but I got a half-way ok expression out of him for once.
I don’t have a brick wall here but this shows how a very shallow depth of field renders a stone wall when shot at a steep angle.

HI Jenn @sweetness29157,
That’s a cute shot and pretty much the idea.
If you move just bit away from the wall and angle the camera towards the wall so that the end of the wall is just about at the edge of the frame then you’ll be seeing more of the converging lines effect.
The extreme blurriness of the lines is created by having a lens…[Read more]

Hi Jenn @sweetness29157,
Here’s a link to the type of shot I was thinking of, pretty much the same as the example provided by @gordonjames but featuring a person as the subject.

@capetown99, thanks!
I had a quick look at your Flickr album, you’ve got some nice ones too.
I know Rob and the LS team are working on a number of updates and I think they plan to do something about the album system, I think that an easy solution would be to encourage LS users to use Flickr and have a link to their album in their LS…[Read more]

Hi Andre @capetown99,
I’m not sure why anybody would be afraid of giving you crit’, maybe I missed something while I was on holiday.
On a technical level I don’t see any glaring errors.
On an aesthetic level I personally think the composition is unbalanced, there are several elements on the right and the island on the left is too subtle…[Read more]

Thanks @gordonjames!
Your list is a great idea, Guggenheim Bilbao was a photo pilgrimage for me and I second your vote for it’s inclusion on any list of highlights for photographers interested in form.
My first photo pilgrimage was to Point Lobos, California. Edward Weston’s stomping grounds for abstracts of the rock formations there.
