haha, cheers Robert. They’re actually not mine, just a couple of randoms that photobombed my shot. Owners were just out of frame. As Diane says though, they helped tell a story.

Thanks Diane. I thought so. Better than just a boring old sunset shot.

Thanks Tersha, appreciate the comments. As I said to Patrick, good luck trying to select just a few images for printing from your library.

Cheers Patrick and thanks for your thoughts. I don’t envy you on printing your images though. Trying to determine which photos of yours you’ll print sounds like a daunting prospect. I’ve seen lots of your work and I have no idea how you’ll cull them down from what must be dozens of print-worthy images to a smaller number for printing. Good luck!

thanks Lenny. I am interested in the Mat process and have started watching online video’s on how others go about it. As for the framing, I hadn’t though of the idea of sourcing them from garage sales etc. I like it. Cheers.

Hi Anne,
Sorry its taken so long to reply, I’ve been travelling (to another cold location as it happens – Tasmania). I think my camera and lens are good for temperatures down to around -10c and from memory, on that morning it would have only been around -6c to -8c so I may have just been lucky. I will keep your experience in mind if I find…[Read more]

Hard to nail down just 3. There’s so many.
Maybe:
Following fast moving targets (birds, aircraft etc)
Astro with foreground exposure
Finding features in featureless landscapes

I was fortunate to enjoy a two week trek in the Himalayas back in May with members of my family and along the way took around a thousand photos. This photo is a stitch of approx 10 images taken on a very cold morning at an altitude of approx 5500m (18000ft) pre-sunrise. There are no doubt many technical flaws in the image given my newbie s…[Read more]

Hi Dahlia, unfortunately (warning: excuses incoming), conditions on that night were pretty awful. Cloudless sky but really humid with a heavy dew and a really dirty sky from seasonal burnoffs in the area. Had to keep stopping the intervalometer to wipe the lens it was so damp. Managed a few shots but they were certainly nothing to write hom…[Read more]

Hi Sharon, thanks for the comments and good pick up about the sky behind the tree. I actually didn’t do much to this as it is a jpeg from a drone which reduced my options somewhat. I didn’t replace the sky but I did use a circular gradient mask over the tree just to highlight it a little (a little too much maybe). I should have merged that ma…[Read more]

Thanks @tersha, @robertapple and @dahliaambrose for the comments. I took the photo after an overnight camp to get meteor photo’s during the Delta Aquariids shower which peaked on Sunday morning. Got plenty of those but this simple drone image ended up being one of my favourites.

Thought you might be interested in this landscape from the Northern Territory – Australia taken in the golden hour before sunrise. It is a mostly open field of giant termite mounds, sometimes referred to as magnetic termite mounds because they are all oriented north-south. The actual reason they line up this way has nothing to do with being…[Read more]

Taken with my old iPhone (5 – I think) off the back of the ferry on the return journey from Alcatraz back to the city. After visiting the prison and hearing the audio and stories of inmates from that time, I could only imagine those same inmates seeing these gulls and wishing they could fly off too. A bit cringeworthy perhaps but it told the s…[Read more]

found this very useful tip on Nigel Danson’s YouTube channel to do with masking and more specifically with merging/intersecting masks. It’s really simple. You may all be familiar with it but if not, I’m sure it’ll come in handy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HV5cC76zM2E
