I particularly like the black and white.  Great detail in the foreground.  I love the depth of field, and that most of the photo is out of focus, disappearing into the distance.  That adds depth and interest.

Regarding the question of whether to advise the person being photographed, my understanding is that you have the right to photograph anyone in a public space.  The question then becomes whether the bookshop is a private or public space.
