I like them both but visually I think I prefer the first one TBH
TBH, I think it’s great without any cropping and I think the colors are fine. The sky is balanced with the asphalt and give two parallel “lines” to frame what’s in between. The 4 “windows” are well balanced in the shot imo. The yellow is a little bright, but I think it is still balanced with the greenery on top (which, based on your title, was at least one focus point).
I like it!
Maybe not spirally, but I do think this has some golden ratio in it 🙂
Thanks so more for all the continued thoughts ideas and suggestions. I like them all 🙂
Dorothy @dmstringer the wide cut you did looks really good and I think you’re right about healing that handle out.
Federico @federicoalegria, I really like your idea to make it B&W, so that’s one thing I tried here 🙂
And Frank @rambler, that’s some great insight, I really appreciate it. I did try to take that to heart, as when I tried my first crops I did not even consider the rule of thirds or the ideas you mentioned about putting what I want where I want it on the canvas.
One additional thing I did was to mask the subject, brighten her slightly and sharpen/contrast up. Then I reversed the mask to darken and lower the contrast of the scene (including the slide). I also added a little vignette like Graham suggested. And I think it is probably better now, more to my liking, but this is really a fun exercise for me to learn from all your replies.
PS: I’m using GIMP as I don’t have Photoshop at the moment, so trying to figure out what all the tools are in that program, and using RawTherapee for processing.
Great ideas and tips you guys. Rob I do usually get closer, this is a wider one than usual. Framing closer to shots is easier for me.
Lenny, I think I will try that, I hadn’t even thought of it.
Thank you all, that is great feedback, I appreciate it!
( I did have three different crops in my replies but it looks like it just has the same one three times, oh well)
Edited and cropped v3
Edited and cropped v2
Edited and cropped v1
I think I agree with the general consensus, pic 2 in the first case and pic 1 in the second case.
I have to ask though, how do you get those crazy sharp and close shots of insects? aren’t you close enough to scare them? Or are you far enough away with a telephoto lens?
I think 3pco and Rob E have some great ideas.
A bit of conjecture here, as a man too, but as the bride I think I might be disappointed with a shot like this because it is SOOO dark, and the wedding/bride may not feel like this dark of a photo is appropriately themed. The bride does stand out and the photo is certainly visually stunning, but the dark trees and vines could certainly be seen as “evil” or “nightmarish” from someone’s POV. Just a thought about the “theme” of the photo being a somewhat ill-fit as far as subject vs background. Maybe just lightening up all the shadows a good 3 stops or more could make a big difference.
