@dahliaambroseย I did a little research. Hummers are very territorial and will defend their feeding area by diving, chasing and lunging at other hummers to keep them away. They have been known to chase another hummer far from the food source to keep them away. That is possibly what the mail hummer is doing in this image.

Hi Dahlia, thanks so much! I had never seen a fading camellia with such brilliant rusty colors before. It definitely got my attention and the pareidolia of seeing a lion’s face and mane was a real bonus. ๐

Thanks Dahlia, thanks for your kind words! I agree with the information Patrick and Robert posted and have saved their good info. I took some flower photos in drizzly/foggy conditions a few days and noticed some red splotchiness in them too. I think it must be the polarizer filter (that I haven’t been able to twist it loose to take it off, so I’ll…[Read more]

Following @dahliaambrose comment: I like the top of the cliff and the dark cloud above it. I do think a crop to square or 8×10 portrait, reducing the amount of dark above the clifftop might be a bit better. That much space at the top is, I think wasted.
This is an edit in your phone. As I said before, I have a hard time making LR edits work well…[Read more]

Thanks, Dahlia! ๐ I haven’t printed this one in BW yet. I actually had the color version printed on both glossy and matte so am not sure what I want to do with the contest yet. The glossy being dark doesn’t seem to bother anyone, and the matte version has been getting enthusiastic comments on how it “looks like a painting or a watercolor.” The…[Read more]

Hi Dahlia, thanks for much for your detailed feedback! I’m trying to learn about the different effects and types of light on my subjects in nature. The morning golden hour light worked great in B&W, but not so much in the original where the bright red was too dominant (to me, anyway). Here’s my original shot, any thoughts about light re: color vs…[Read more]

Hi Dahlia, thanks very much! ๐ This is great feedback, and I’ll definitely try pulling out more detail in the shadows.ย The contest I usually enter each year has no “nature” photography, but I think “waterscape” will work where it be at least something unexpected. I know the judges are always looking for something they haven’t seen before, they…[Read more]
