I’m fortunate to live nearby a 120 year old architectural gem here in Pasadena CA, The Gamble House. It’s my go-to for practicing low light photography.

Hi Federico. The show was actually called “Enchanted”. It was an amazing display with great shots everywhere you looked.

Hello everyone. This time of year brings out some pretty amazing light shows in major cities everywhere. Los Angeles has a few of them and I went to one to see if I could get myself fired up about photography again. Now, no tripods are allowed at these events(at least here they are not)so I wasn’t expecting much from handheld low light…[Read more]

Thank you, Federico. The gamble house has actually told many stories, as it has been used in dozens of movies in its over 100 years of existence. It is a indeed photogenic. Even more so at night, I think.

Thank you, Rob. Very nice of you to say so. But a beginner I am. Thanks for the encouragement.

Thank you, Beaky. Not bad for an old dude wear’n glasses in the dark, right?

Thank you, Erik. I’ve got two workshops coming up, both shooting downtown LA at night. So, I’m sure the tilt-shift lens will be discussed. Thanks for the tip.

I’ve been out shooting at night in preparation for a few outdoor low light workshops I’ve signed up for. Here are a couple of shots I’m sort of happy with. As a new photographer this exercise has pushed me to become more familiar with my camera’s settings which has given me a better understanding of the exposure triangle. I’m getting there, but…[Read more]

Hi Dahlia. Yeah, one of Ericks edits addressed something in the shot that was distracting to me but I didn’t know how to fix it. The three lamps over both the B and L detract from the beauty of the sign glowing under the fireworks. Erik knocked those out and the result gives the shot the look of fireworks exploding over the Hotel California. I…[Read more]

I’m hoping this fits the topic. I shot this last year and may have incorporated natural juxtaposition without understanding it as a photography concept at that time. Or, I’m way off base and this isn’t a good example at all.

I love that look! This produces the result I had imagined several days before I shot it. You have given me much to think about. Which is why I joined LS in the first place. Thank you so much for the demo and the time you took to produce it!

Erik, thank you for your edit. Your changes are awesome and lend so much to the photo. I gave myself an assignment to capture a shot of fireworks over the iconic Rose Bowl. Your edit removes what the shot doesn’t need and refines it to what I set out to get. Does this edit help address what Rob was referring to concerning the visual weight of two…[Read more]
