Thank you Gordon and Rob for bringing essential information under my nose – knowledge that I should have dived into long ago but haven´t, and the lack of which be a good explanation some of my sorrows. I see a long weekend ahead of me with bracketing, sweet spot exploration etc etc in sunny weather and minus 10 degrees…. a good excuse not to waste time on unpacking all the boxes that fill up my flat (just moved from Norway to Iceland) Wish you a nice weekend and thank you again.

Thank you Rob and Gordon for your information regarding aperture, diffraction and iso. Somewhere I picked up a rule of thumb postulating that the dept of field increases with decrease of aperture – which I never understood but ate raw given the complexity of theory of waves and optics. Now I understand, especially with pixel size added. Have to take a look at the sweet spot of my lenses as well as the iso. Thank you Rob for the link to Cambridgeincolour – a very useful site.
Thank you for your aesthetic comments Chris: The white lines on mountain ridges was mostly due to sharpness overdone. Reduced in the new version. The “painted looking” spurs have not changed in the new version,the blame is on bad resolution due to f/32. And, I really can recommend a visit to Indre Nordfjordeid, Oldedalen, Gloppen etc every valley has their own brand of beer, most of it excellent.
I have one shot with Canon 16-35 mm, Iso 50, f/22, 35 mm. I have slightly brightened the fields in the bottom of the valley, removed all visible spots etc, decreased the sharpening. Not cropped the trees at the bottom, as it destroys the perspective
https://flic.kr/p/Aw3kAaI agree with you about improvement in balance with increased dominance of the glacier compared with the first picture. I like it much better now. Regarding the red colour: Most of the ground and the lower part of the mountain are covered by greyish moss – but at this time of the year another plant of deep red colour, one I cannot name, dominates the colour palette of the moss. This is my first time to visit this place in november, so I have not seen this before – the colour was truly amazing. Thanks for your comments and advise

Don’t change it.Interesting experiment. Agree with some comments above: I would have tried it on a less complex image, for instance a bush with large leaves (lower right of the image).

Auroras on a partly clouded sky as in your photo, can only serve a colourful background for a more interesting foreground. You need a less overcast sky for the auroras to be the main theme. So it is as so often, a question of luck. It can be frustrating to have prepared a camp in the cold for a long night, and when the aurora begin to dance it is in company of boring, grey and low hanging clouds as in your pic.In my part of the world (Iceland, Norway), wind is often an important factor to consider when shooting nightscapes. That means shorter exposures and higher iso.
And auroras move. Even if there is no wind you have to opt for shorter exposures in order to get them sharper. I usually go for 4 – 8 sec, f 2.8 – 5.6 perhaps. If really bright aurora you can go down to iso 800 – 1000 maybe.

Agree with Toby. Perhaps a tiny increase in white would make the main rose stand out a bit more. A really lovely foto.

And – do visit 🙂 I live in Reykjavik, a small and yet a big town of app 140000 people. We are about 330 thousand living on 40 thousand square miles, so there is plenty of room for all of us and the app 1.5 mill tourists that visit us yearly. The tourists tend to visit the same places, some of the sites resemble “The Rambla” in summertime, so it is a question of choosing out of season or staying out of the gringo trail.Thank you Photobug, the colours were not saturated – that is what they are in autumn after a shower of rain. I reduced them in the new version (below) in order to harmonise the picture.
The region where it was shot, south east Iceland, is among the most visited by photographers for a good reason. You will not regret if you decide to take your camera there. But beware of the time of the year, autumn is good not only because of the colours but mainly due to the seasonal reduction in number of tourists 🙂Thank you Irene, Gordon, Tobie and Photobug for advise, they are really instructive, composition and cropping are my issues.
