To get it right in the camera is a nice try (not sure why you want to do that, post is as important as the shoot), but if you don´t get it right in the camera, like with this image: Now what?
As the others mentioned, I do not understand your settings. F/19 to get everything into focus did not work. You write you went for the layered effect, but…[Read more] -

Shot 4 and 5 are the same location but (IMHO) shot 5 is so much better.

Erik Fransman replied to the topic Split Rock Lighthouse- Minnesota's North Shore of Lake Superior in the forum General Photo Chit Chat 1y, 7mo ago
Hi Daniel, for me there is too much negative space that does not add to the image. Partly (IMHO) because there is not enough space on the left side of the lighthouse. It’s just not in balance.
For this image, I would choose (again) a 1×1 crop and tune down the blue a tad (can be even more tuned down). Sharpen the rock and lighthouse, but not the…[Read more] -

Hi Marty, your white balance looks good. I just do not think you have the correct framing to make it work well. Possibly a 1×1 crop may serve your image better. A slight vignette at the top and the left side may work. Something like this.

Hi Marty, as an exercise in “Action” shots, it works pretty well. Although, I do not really see this as an action shot. Your settings are pretty decent but as Beth suggests, just try other settings and see if you like the results better. I do not thnk the image is soft, the bubbles on the water are in focus. I think the “softness” is a result of…[Read more]

Stella, Photography is all about seeing, perceiving, and recognizing.
You saw this, perceived and recognized it, and then made it your own.
Well done. Congratulations. -

Too much clutter. I do like the idea of the beautiful flower in the cluttered garage, but it does not come across because the flower itself is too cluttered.
Here´s a sloppy version of some cleaning up and different crop.

Hi Daniel, you did not post it in the ST, but that did not stop the sharks from commenting and suggesting.
It´s a really interesting image and I can see what attracted you to it. Besides all the suggestions of gradient a.s.o. my problem with the image is, that there is too much to see.
Obviously, that is what makes the location so interesting.…[Read more]

Good moment Jim with caera shake.
As you know, with 230mm you need at least 1/250s shutter speed. 1/50 ss is not going to do it, even if you have image stabilization and or IBIS.
Next time I would go for 1/200s (if you have image stabilization), ISO 800.

Jim, I like the original crop. Horror movie flick.
The 1×1 crop is possible for something that we used to have in the home, an album cover, but I would crop it a tad differently. The crop with the mouth open is more for an X-rated movie.

Hi Graham,
Your Pentax K5 is a cracking camera, so we know, can´t blame that.
The technical side can be a bit overwhelming. It is always great to know your camera inside out.
If the technique is in your way, I would suggest taking a step back and build from there.
Just start at the basic. The next time you go out for a shoot, why don´t you c…[Read more]

This is a bit more late afternoon. The sky on the left is too much saturated, but the Hay Bales look like they are enjoying the afternoon sun. You can hear them say: Is it already PM, time for a drink….
