You’re welcome Jon. Yes, I’ve seen a lot of those tacky B&W you’re talking about LOL. I think the important thing that we all need to remind ourselves is that, photography is art and not necessarily a single compulsory technique. There are sooo many things that could be used to enhance your photo. I could have still used a little…[Read more]

@jonostan continuing your theme of girls in colour co-ordination with doors using 50mm prime lenses, I snapped this in Carnaby Street last Friday 🙂 I wish I had had the time to ask her to pose but I was with the wife in a hurry so was just snapping candids along the way

Since you have given permission for us to edit your photos, hear are some examples of ways to improve this photo. I have decided to de-saturate the entire photo, which also helped the over exposed bike face as well. I had made no other edits to number1. Notice how the colors blend more without having to use “white balance.” Second…[Read more]

Hi Jon. Photography is very personal. What will work for you, may not work for someone else. The important thing is that you do what is most comfortable to you; your photographs will come out much better that way. Personally, a good zoom lens has always proved essential when doing street photography. The pedestrians tend not to feel…[Read more]

@jonostan most photography magazines I’ve read say that most people don’t mind you asking to take their picture so all in all I wouldn’t worry about it, you have had much more success than I have, I’ll have to join you on a shoot someday so I can see you technique 🙂 The picture you got it great, you spotted some areas of improvement yourself…[Read more]

I love those accidents, @jonostan! I have been surprised in processing as well. Yes, the shoes and soda bottle are cropped, but street photography is one of those genre’s where the adrenaline is pumping a little more strongly and it’s easy to miss things. I bet you were just excited to get her face in that sweet spot, though! I like the lighting…[Read more]

Nicely done @jonostan, you are already one step ahead of me because I’ve never had the guts to ask someone if I can take their picture.. It looks like a candid shot rather than posed so he was obviously pretty relaxed about you being around. I usually have a 50-200 lens but always feel like I am cheating 🙂
With the muted colours in the rest…[Read more]

@jonostan anywhere with tourists is a great place to start because it is so much easier to blend in, Trafalgar Square, China Town and Oxford Street are my main areas beside the train and tend to give great opportunities for street photography
Eventually I’d like to get to somewhere near the level of this guy…[Read more]

Thanks for your thoughts, @jonostan. Yes, I too would like more in that horizon area but it just isn’t sharp enough – a tripod really is needed for this sort of shot but It was opportunity, not planned!
You’re right about the sky. I’ve paid a lot of attention to the beach in post proc, but there’s a bit for sky at the top not adding much.
As…[Read more] -

the reason I shoot with a small aperture (usually 22-32) is the fact that the camera is very close to set and from my experience that’s the aperture I need to get anything in focus .
About the dark side-the browser usually pushes the brightness down a little bit-my original TIFF file is lighter.

Hi @jonostan one of the things that I learnt the hard way is that no amount of post processing will make a bad image good but it will make a good image great. If you shoot raw then you will always need to do a certain amount of editing, this can range from slight colour tweaks to B&W or HDR conversions.
One thing that I read which really…[Read more]

@jonostan Great to have you onboard!
I certainly tend to agree with you about post-processing. It’s one of those silly fights that we photographers invent to fill the boredom of cold nights 😉Check It Out

That’s a pretty fair opening bid, @jonostan! I’ve yet to put anything into ST so I perhaps need to tread carefully.
Or perhaps not!!
You don’t say whether you have used any post-processing software. Packages such as Lightroom usually have the facility to correct converging verticals, which whilst that is not quite your problem with the…[Read more]
