I prefer the second image and I would mask the bird and boost the shadows a little of the darker face and neck details.

My eye is drawn to the left, bright side of the nut hammer and then the empty space behind it. Interesting composition though.

I agree with Tobie, a faster shutter speed will always help for any “action” photographs, and focus on the eye if possible.

The Z9 focuses on the eye so since it was so close, other parts of the bird are not as sharp at f/6,3

This is a focus stacked (6-shots) image, one of my wife’s pride and joy orchids that are in our bathroom window. Z9 with 105 mm macro lens with a low CTO light from the bottom

Thanks Steve. Yes, he was on the move from the feeder with a morsel, about 25 feet away. I shot it hand held at 1/2000 shutter speed , plus I had the camera in DX (1.5) crop mode, effectively filling the frame at 1200 mm. The 800 lens on my Z9 weighs a tick over 9 LBS so it could be attributed to the combination of the bird running up the branch…[Read more]
