Fabulous shot & well-deserved POTW, Pat! Federico said it all with his pick and observations on your tremendous capture.
I saw hummingbirds fight for territory once, but I have a story for you on behavior that tops it all. The father of a friend of mine (who a quite a prankster/practical joker) told his daughter to run see what he had left for her out in the barn. She ran over to find two dead hummingbirds with one’s beak piercing the heart of the other. True story! She never figured out if what she saw was true in nature or if he had set it up to tease her.
Hi Rob, thanks so much for your generous and enthusiastic feedback! You have just made my year. 😀 Capturing the joys of tulips with all their fascinating quirks as they bloom and fade can’t be beat in my book! Thanks again for turning me on to BW, it really makes their shapes and personalities “pop” out to leave viewers guessing. I’m totally hooked!
Hi Tersha, thanks so much for your kind words & I love hearing about faves! The one you chose is one of my special faves too 😀

Thanks so much, David! 😀
I’m honored by your pick, my friend! Thanks so much. Not sure why, but it reminds me of Alexander the Great’s helmet. It’s a fun one to think about. 😀
Thanks so much for your comment, Dahlia. Making art with my photography is what I strive to do, so it’s very special feedback to know you see them that way! 🙂
Thanks @wendy p, I appreciate that! 🙂

Thanks, Robert! I’m glad you enjoyed my shots. I’m chuckling about birds like these being called sky rats, I would’ve never thought of that. That’s exactly the reason why my spouse refuses to have a bird feeder in our backyard. He should get a good laugh about sky rats. 😀
Many thanks for your kind words, my friend! 😀 This experience made a believer out of me for single-point focus!
A bit more luck with birds yesterday! I was walking from the arboretum parking lot toward the entrance and happened to notice some movement on a tree branch just up ahead (a bird). I quickly managed to get my camera up to my eye and got off 4 quick shots. Fortunately, my camera was set to single point focus in advance, and I’m happy to say that 2 out of 4 got the job done. I thought I had taken shots of mourning doves which are common here but imagine my surprise in post processing to see its bright red eyes with blue patches around them. Wow! After doing some online research, I discovered that it’s a white-winged dove. Hopefully, I’ll see more of them now that I know what to look for. 😀
Great pick and essay with your thoughts, Federico. Awesome pick! And Patrick, your creativity never ceases to amaze me. I’m chuckling wondering what the red light is in your past. A master class in creativity and storytelling using a well-known metaphor of the red light. I wish I’d been a fly on the wall for your setup! 😀 Great job, I love it! Congrats on POTW
Excellent feedback as always, Patrick. Thanks! Your attention to detail is great along with your creativity to get superb shots. I’ll see what I can do but lying on the ground at eye level makes my body cringe thinking about it lol. I agree about the importance of catchlights, but I don’t know how to plan for them.
Thanks for your feedback! I’ll certainly try out your settings on ISO and focus. I wasn’t aware of animal eye focus, I’ll do some research on that.
Thanks for your great suggestions @lightandshadow! I normally have a hard time trying to get a shot of a robin busy on the ground. They move too fast! What shutter speed do you normally use?
Thanks, Patrick! I’ll check it out
Wow, Patrick! What a wonderful surprise. This is a great honor & thank you so much for the pick, my friend. 😀 I really appreciate you sharing the details about how you see my shot. I look forward to trying out your suggestions for strategies to entice birds for more photo ops. 😀
