IceCarver – ideas for improvement? This is a crop from an impromptu pic of an ice carver during a competition. I’m new at ‘portraits’ so I’d like your opinions on both the camera settings used and any recommended editing changes. Shot on a Canon 70D with the 18-135 IS STM kit lens at 135mm, f/5.6, 1/200, ISO 250. Thanks.

Not only does it sparkle, it was the winning piece in the speed carving competition at IceFest 2014 at The University of Akron (Ohio, USA)

With so many of us now choosing to shoot RAW and adjust in post, are there any dslr models that have done away with the unneeded controls and concentrated on enhancing the most essential features?

I feel touchscreen controls on articulating lcd panels is the best recent advance in camera ergonomics. For me, it is easier to tap a control spot than fumble around with dials and buttons while shooting at odd […]

Good ideas. Only problem is the specs for my t2i say it is for 32 degrees F. and up. Since warranty is no longer an issue, how low can I reasonably go with a camera like this? Lenses are kit plus an EF 50mm 1.8.

These are good tips. I especially need to learn to delete pics rather than hoarding them. That should sharpen my eye toward the truly better ones. Thanks for goading me into a little housekeeping. 🙂

@dobra, that is definitely something to consider next time. When I do subjects like this, I’ll try shots from varying distances to leave some wiggle room for adjustments. I normally fiddle with basic settings while shooting, but hadn’t thought of something like that. Thanks for your insight.

@fredf, I see your point, but please understand that I’m not in love with vignettes either. My other responses should clarify my rationale for using it in white in this particular instance. However, since I don’t have much experience using them, I’ll go back to try again. Perhaps I can find an acceptable image in there w/o the vig. Thanks for your…[Read more]

@pmarione, that’s a fair question. I felt the original shot was a little dark and bulky around all the edges, but I couldn’t crop it much without losing too much of the glass. Contrary to commonly popular thought on this forum, I felt that the roundness of a vignette would work well to compliment the lines of this glassware. Black was the first…[Read more]

@somebloke, Fair enough. I tried lower iso’s but couldn’t get a fast enough exposure to overcome the lack of IS in this lens. Handheld shots while squatting down are not my forte, but I’ll keep trying. Took this as I was leaving work so I didn’t have the opportunity to set up a stable shooting base. Used 2.8 as a starting point because all I’ve…[Read more]

New nifty fifty. Critique and comments sought. This is the first shot made with my new EF 50mm f/1.8 II on a t2i. I wanted to see how it would capture the colors and reflections on the glass pieces. I know most sharks don’t like vignetting, but I thought this pic benefited from the rounded framing. What do you think? Colors are as shot in Canon RAW…[Read more]

My offering is a little different:

Shadow cast on the wall behind me. The window is at ground level, screened, and has Virginia Creeper growing on it. I thought this was interesting because the light came in the window, across one room, through a door, and across another room to finally…[Read more]
