@reneep – One trick I have learnt that I obey for almost any photograph of a person on animal is to get on the eye level or lower.
Shooting down onto them can work, but most times you will want to shoot level or lower for a more powerful composition.

IMO, you’re in the right place to help you learn. I’ve learned plenty combining other sources of information with this site.
Not sure that the subject looking at you would do much. But you are on the right track: Keep looking for compelling shots and take a number of “optional shots” from different physical perspectives.

@reneep Hi Renee, love the picture of this bird. Not sure if you cropped the top part. If yes, would love to see more space on top. Also you could remove the tiny speck of branch on the bottom right 🙂

Hi, Renee @reneep great discussion here. I really like how Graham added grass to the bottom of the seaview image. On the girl & surf image, I like this image. I see halo fringing around her arms, so am guessing you’ve already done some adjustments. I tried doing what Beth suggested – increase the range of tones. (I’m still learni…[Read more]

@frank, do you suggest learning PS before LR? I have been trying to learn LR but know nothing about PS.
Renee if I may answer this: NO! Get fully competent in LR and learn specific PS skills as you go along. LR was built for photo editing and it kicks PS’ behind in terms of speed and ease of use – for PHOTO EDITING. Learn the following PS f…[Read more]

@reneep Renee I was a late adopter of Lightroom (this spring) for organizing my images, although I’ve been a PS beginner for about 8 years. It depends on what you do with your images, but one reason I finally put in all the work to transition to LR was because of the handy upload link to smugmug.com where I load many snapshots for fri…[Read more]

Hi @reneep, I think you have nailed the lighting on the model and the shot has a nice broad dynamic range which often looks good in black and white. Where I think it could be changed… not sure – I think those railings on the top of the bridge take the eye away from the model (or possibly towards her legs rather than face). So that element of…[Read more]
