One of the things I do, much to the horror of my daughter and, to a certain extent, my wife, is to make images of people I don’t know in natural settings. I suppose it’s a version of street photography, though it isn’t often on a street. I saw these two (actually 4 since their dogs add character) nicely posed on a trip to the river in November. I…[Read more]

And that’s a pretty astonishing treatment. Well done.

First Saturday of the new year always brings the Millrace Massacre and Iceman Challenge to the Saluda River rapids in Columbia, South Carolina. I generally stand on the boardwalk overlooking the river with my 500mm lens tripod mounted. I took over 200 pictures before going home while the event continued and have around 20 that I thought…[Read more]

In addition to Rob’s recommendation, I would level the image. I would also at least consider on reshoot to include the bottom of the crosses (a slightly higher POV). You’ve got a good bit of leeway with the shutter speed and might be able to pull off having both the front and back in focus.
I love your candle light and the mood it gives your image.

Steve Walker replied to the topic learning to pan in the forum The Shark Tank Feedback Forum 2wk, 6d ago
I’ve been waiting to see if others with expertise I lack had anything to say before jumping in. As a former recreational road cyclist, I always look at cycling photos. Most often, these involve race scenes. I have never ever had any success with panning though I’ve seen lots of them so any feedback I give on the subject deserves at least 2 grains…[Read more]

I would guess that even though it is the same scene, day in and day out, it feels new each time. Nicely done and an important life lesson in there.

Thank you. I do like misty, foggy weather.
Years ago, there was a program called Picassa that had a neat automatic tool that created a montage of selected photos. Google bought the company and, over time, eliminated the feature. It may exist somewhere inside Google Photos but I haven’t seen it. I do see how to create a single image out of…[Read more]

I like it.
How did you brighten the droplets without blowing out other light areas?

I have dozens of pictures over several years from this spot, each with its own character.

I would never figure out what this was if you hadn’t told me and still am puzzled as to how this happened. But it doesn’t really matter. Color, texture, line and light–it’s reeeeaaallllly good.

Steve Walker replied to the topic To crop or not crop, that is the question in the forum The Shark Tank Feedback Forum 4wk ago
thank you. I framed it to include the branches on the right with their water droplets and on the left for the reason you stated–plus it’s the natural aspect ratio and portrait would have excluded the rocks in the water and a considerable portion of the background.
I have critiques from other sites that recommended the crop. Interestingly. one of…[Read more]

Thanks for the clarification. I will see if I can do that, though I haven’t had much success with removing objects, particularly large batches like the branches on the right.

Steve Walker replied to the topic To crop or not crop, that is the question in the forum The Shark Tank Feedback Forum 4wk, 1d ago
Are you referring to the branches on the right or the left or both? I have removed both of them through cropping. Do you mean just cropping from the right?

so how did you follow the riders around to get into position for this variety of images? Drive around the countryside or….?

Here are 2 images of the same scene. I posted the wider version and it has gotten a significant amount of attention- compared to other images. I have very few friends/followers. I went back to the image and cropped it. I’d appreciate feedback about whether one works better than the other or other commentary about the pictures.

Steve Walker replied to the topic Do I have "Something to say"? in the forum General Photo Chit Chat 4wk, 1d ago
Don’t discount the “belief that everything has something to say”. That’s a very important reason, otherwise, we sleepwalk through life and fail to appreciate for good or ill what is before us. Years ago, I found a book and subsequently a web site called “Developing Vision and Style”. It was a collection of images and commentary about those 2…[Read more]
